The ITV cameras head to Sandown on Saturday and there is Group 1 action to look forward to in the form of the Coral-Eclipse, in which Constitution River looks to follow up his Prix du Jockey Club success against older rivals.
Racing Post tipster Harry Wilson has provided three bets for Sandown’s card.
13:50 Sandown - Getreadytorumble @ 10/1
15:00 Sandown - Silenciosa @ 9/1
16:10 Sandown - Spirit Of Saxony @ 7/4
13:50 Sandown - Getreadytorumble @ 10/1
Sandown’s card on Saturday kicks off with the Group 3 Charge and, as is often the case in the sprint division, the contest looks wide open.
Asfoora is likely to prove popular after a good run in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, but she lacks the potential of a lot of her rivals and may prove vulnerable.
Therefore, I want to take her on with Getreadytorumble, who must be close to being given the ‘unluckiest horse of the season’ tag.
He was a huge eyecatcher on his reappearance at Naas, where he finished just a length and a half behind Mission Central despite being repeatedly denied a clear run and then forced to challenge away from the favoured side of the track. That form was boosted considerably when Mission Central landed the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Luck has continued to elude him in two starts since; he was caught out on the wing with no cover from a poor draw in stall one in the Temple Stakes at Haydock before being given the same stall at Royal Ascot, where he reared as the stalls opened and was slowly away as a result, virtually ending any hope at the start.
Given his upward trajectory last season and evidence that he remains more capable than recent outings suggest, he deserves another opportunity to prove himself in this wide-open field.
15:00 Sandown - Silenciosa @ 17/2
It is no real surprise to see Pacific Mission at the top of the market for the Listed Distaff, as a repeat of her Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf second from last year would probably make her hard to beat.
However, Pacific Mission has been below her best in two starts this season and is worth taking on with the unexposed Silenciosa, who looks overpriced for in-form trainer Tom Clover.
She looked value for more than the three-quarter-length winning distance on her juvenile debut, and proved just that when a huge eyecatcher on her three-year-old reappearance in the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury. She did well to finish sixth that day, having been denied a clear run and forced to switch around most of the field inside the final furlong.
The form of that Newbury contest has since been boosted, notably with the runner-up Touleen following home Precise in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, while Ellusive Butterfly, who was fourth, has subsequently landed two victories at Listed level.
It speaks of the regard in which she is held that she was thrown into the deep end in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket next time, and she was far from disgraced despite being well beaten, showing up well for a long way on what proved to be the unfavoured part of the track.
This contest is a lot easier than that Classic, and she has plenty of scope for improvement after just three starts, especially with more to come over a mile.
16:10 Sandown - Spirit Of Saxony @ SP
Whatever the 7f handicap after the ITV4 action lacks in quantity, it sure makes up for in intrigue as a few of these arrive with seemingly a bit to prove.
One who doesn’t is King’s Cavalry, who has won his last two starts, but the value looks to lie with Spirit Of Saxony, who also arrives in form.
A close second behind the then 93-rated New Monarch in a 7f novice at Kempton on his reappearance, Spirit Of Saxony shaped better than the results suggest in a couple of mile events on his next two starts, notably looking as though he needed a drop in trip when a fading fifth in a handicap at Ascot in May.
That was a particularly strong race too, with the winner going on to finish second in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot and the fourth landing the Silver Bowl at Carlisle next time, while the sixth has also won since.
Spirit Of Saxony got the better of a subsequent winner in a 7f novice at Kempton next time before looking a touch unlucky when chasing home an unexposed sort over this course and distance last time, finishing well after a trouble passage.
He has more to offer over this seven-furlong trip and a 2lb rise for last time shouldn’t stop him from going one better.
Harry Wilson enjoyed plenty of success in his column on Tuesday, with King Of Stars (9-2), Classy Clarets (2-1) and Forever Glamorous (6-4) all winning.
