Bristol City v Newcastle United Prediction: 17/20 Magpies to set the standard

Newcastle United will look to maintain their unbeaten pre-season campaign when they travel to Ashton Gate to take on Bristol City in a friendly on Wednesday.

The Magpies are looking to hit the ground running after a frustrating 2025/26 Premier League campaign and manager Eddie Howe has had his work cut out this summer, with plenty of his players away on international duty at the World Cup.

There has also been plenty of change at Ashton Gate, with former Lincoln City coach Michael Skubala deciding to switch clubs after helping the Red Imps earn promotion to the second tier.

Both teams still have several weeks to go until their respective domestic campaigns get underway, but there is every chance those in attendance witness an entertaining encounter in Bristol.

Bristol City v Newcastle United Prediction

Best Bet: Newcastle to win @ 8/13

Newcastle fans have already had to say goodbye to several members of their first-team squad, with the Magpies cashing in on Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, while former captain Kieran Trippier left for Wolves at the start of the summer.

Howe had splashed the cash to give his new team a new lease of life, with Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen all joining the club.

Newcastle were without 13 first-team players in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Gateshead, but they should be able to welcome back five of their players in midweek.

Nick Woltemade, Malick Thiaw, Anthony Elanga, Toure and Yoane Wissa have all been pictured at the club's training base and Howe will hope to integrate them into his squad, even if they play a small part.

However, even if Howe rests his key players, they should still have too much class for their hosts.

The Robins are actually playing two friendlies at the same time on Wednesday, with one half of their squad playing Forest Green Rovers away from home, while the other half will do battle with Newcastle.

With Skubala set to field a weakened XI, the Magpies can take control of this tie from the outset.

Alternative Bet: Both teams to score @ 8/13

Newcastle kept a clean sheet in their opening friendly against Darlington, but both teams to score looks a good play at Ashton Gate.

The Magpies will eventually field plenty of inexperienced players who are looking for minutes and that should leave them exposed at the back and give the Robins a chance to find the back of the net.

The lure of a Premier League coming to town is often a good selling point for a club and Skubala will no doubt play his best team in the first half.

Both teams were in action only four days ago, so there is every chance they are slow out of the blocks as they rebuild for the new campaign.

Newcastle's squad outclasses Bristol City's in all departments and the quality within their ranks should mean they can score at any time.

If Howe gives some of his first-team stars game time in the second half, that only aids their chances of winning the second half.
