Alfie May is reportedly set to leave Huddersfield Town this summer and a return to Doncaster Rovers appears to be on the cards.
Experienced forward May was a marquee signing for Huddersfield last summer, joining from Birmingham City after helping Blues romp to the League One title.
However, the 32-year-old's stay at the Accu Stadium looks set to be short-lived with a return to Yorkshire rivals Doncaster, a club he knows well, being talked up, with the suggestion being a deal has even been reached over the transfer.
The arrival of May was seen as a major statement of intent for Huddersfield, the forward having scored 16 goals in Birmingham's promotion-winning campaign, but it is fair to say that expectations have not been met.
May was a regular fixture for the Terriers, appearing in 40 matches across all competitions, but he only managed seven goals, with two of them coming on what could be his final outing for the club against AFC Wimbledon at the start of May.
It was an overall disappointing season for Huddersfield, who went into the campaign as one of the promotion favourites, but finished down in ninth, eight points off the play-off places and 24 adrift of the top two.
Huddersfield would have thought they were guaranteed goals with the signing of May, who had been prolific at League One level in the four seasons prior to his arrival in West Yorkshire.
His 16 league goals for Birmingham came off the back of 23 in his sole campaign with Charlton Athletic, who signed him from Cheltenham Town in 2023 after he notched 43 times across his final two seasons with the Robins.
If May does leave Huddersfield during the summer, whoever brings him in will be hoping he can recapture that kind of form, and Doncaster will know better than most about what their former striker is capable of.
It was Doncaster that took a chance on late developer May, signing the then 23-year-old from non-league Hythe Town in January 2017 and within a few months he had helped his new side earn promotion to League One.
May continued to feature regularly for Donny over the following two-and-a-half years, memorably scoring four goals against Chorley in an FA Cup tie, but he was never prolific during his time in South Yorkshire, contributing just 10 goals in 92 league appearances.
The former Millwall youngster left the club to join Cheltenham in early 2020 and his goalscoring exploits really took off from there.
Doncaster boss Grant McCann knows all about May, having managed him during his own first stint at the club between 2018 and 2019, and adding goals to his squad appears to be a priority for the Northern Irishman over the summer.
Only five teams, three of which were relegated, scored fewer goals than Donny's total of 50 in League One last season.
Rovers have also allowed experienced forward Billy Sharp and creative force Jordan Gibson to leave the club following the expiry of their contracts, meaning there are gaps to fill at the top end of the pitch.
May would not only be brought in to fill the scoring void left by Sharp, but he would also be able to add his experience after the departure of the 40-year-old.
If the transfer does go through, it could be an exciting one for both club and player, with May potentially returning to Donny a much different player to the one that left over six years ago.
