England will look to follow up their fantastic 4-0 T20I series win over India in a three-match ODI tussle that gets underway at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Harry Brook’s men dominated all four completed matches, usurping India at the top of the ICC T20 rankings after their 56-run win in the fifth match at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.
But India are a formidable outfit in the 50-over format and will field a vastly more experienced side with the likes of Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah back in the fold.
Captain Shubman Gill led from the front in a 3-0 series whitewash of Afghanistan last month, hitting 238 runs and earning back-to-back Player of the Match awards.
India may also have uncovered a new fast-bowling prospect in Gurnoor Brar, who claimed seven wickets in the series and 10 more in a recent first-class match against Sri Lanka A.
Meanwhile, England have not played any ODI cricket since the turn of the year when they bounced back from a 3-0 mauling in New Zealand by beating Sri Lanka 2-1 on foreign soil.
They are currently ranked eighth in the world and may need to win a few more matches to avoid having to prequalify for the next World Cup.
But head coach Brendon McCullum gave a bullish interview in the wake of his side’s T20 success, hinting at an aggressive gameplan for the upcoming series.
England have won seven consecutive ODIs at Edgbaston, making the venue one of their strongest white‑ball fortresses, but the match takes place within 48 hours of McCullum’s sacking as Test coach.
Best Bet - Highest Opening Partnership - India @ 4/5
Alternative Bet - Player of the Match - Virat Kohli @ 8/1
Bet Builder - India to win, Shubman Gill Over 32.5 Runs & Saqib Mahmood to be Top England Bowler @ 14/1
Best Bet: Highest Opening Partnership - India @ 4/5
Despite England’s superb Edgbaston record, India arrive with greater stability and a more complete ODI structure.
The tourists’ top order of Gill, Rohit Sharma and Kohli is the envy of world cricket and usually lays a solid platform for a big total.
India’s strength is such that Yashasvi Jaiswal, who averages 71 in ODIs and hit an unbeaten century in the last match of the Afghanistan series, has been dropped to accommodate Kohli's return.
In the last series, India’s openers averaged 78.33 for the first wicket — in stark contrast to England’s initial pairing on the tour of New Zealand last year.
Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett were the duo in question as England put on 0, 3 and 7 for the first wicket in a 3-0 defeat
Smith is out of form, favour and fitness right now as he struggles with a finger injury, so Jacob Bethell looks likely to partner Duckett at the top with an unusually out-of-sorts Joe Root due in at three.
They will face a stern new-ball examination from a returning Bumrah, the prodigious swing of Arshdeep Singh and the pacy breakout star Brar.
India have enough depth in their seam options to attack throughout this series and it would be no surprise to see them make an early breakthrough when England bat in Birmingham.
Alternative Bet: Player of the Match - Virat Kohli @ 8/1
Kohli’s return to the side brings that added spice and Box Office appeal for this series.
He’s a true giant of the game and has scored more ODI runs than Gill or Rohit since 2025.
If India win this match, he is likely to have made his mark and his huge profile makes him a prime candidate to be named Player of the Match.
Gill scooped two of the three Player of the Match awards against Afghanistan in Kohli’s absence, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore star claimed the award in the opening match of his last two series for India - against New Zealand and South Africa.
India have won seven of the last eight ODIs against England, including two of the last three away from home.
Gill is in superb form with the bat after top-scoring for his side in both the Test and ODIs against Afghanistan. He averages 59.09 in this format and should surpass 32 runs with ease at Edgbaston.
Add Saqib Mahmood to be England’s top bowler to this Bet Builder. The Lancashire paceman has taken three wickets in each of his two ODI appearances at Edgbaston.
