Brendon McCullum sacked as England Test head coach

Brendon McCullum has been sacked as England Test head coach.

Initially, the Kiwi did a brilliant job to breathe life back into a failing England Test side but recent series losses to Australia and New Zealand have spelled the end of the Bazball era in red ball cricket.

Aside from the on-pitch results, major flaws relating to the culture of the England setup under McCullum's watch have been unearthed in recent months with multiple scandals grabbing the attentions of headline writers.

His captain, Ben Stokes, recently announced his retirement from international cricket amid rumours of a fall out with the hierarchy and this is therefore an announcement that doesn't come as too much of a surprise.

Stokes arguably defied McCullum's 'Bazball' approach during last winter's Ashes defeat to Australia and the coach's refusal to back Stokes as captain when he was under investigation for a 'breach of team protocol' looks to have ended up being the final nail in the coffin for both men.

"I've absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved together," said McCullum.

"There've been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way, but that's all part of taking on a challenge like this.

"Of course I'm gutted not to be continuing, but I respect the decision. My focus now is on giving everything I've got to the white-ball teams and helping England keep moving forward."
