Qatar face a tough opening World Cup match against Switzerland at the Levi's Stadium on Saturday as both teams begin their campaigns.
In 2022, Qatar officially became the worst host nation in the history of the World Cup as they were eliminated after just two games, losing to Ecuador and Senegal. Indeed, the Arab nation finished with zero points and a -6 goal difference in the end.
Switzerland reached the last-16 in Qatar and their performance at Euro 2024 offers hope that another solid tournament showing is on the cards.
The Swiss were only a penalty shootout victory away from a spot in the semi-finals.
Winning Group B, which also contains Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada, should be the main aim for Murat Yakin and his players and from then on, who knows just how far they can go.
Switzerland tend to begin their World Cup campaigns brightly. Across their previous six tournaments, the Swiss have won three and drawn three of their six opening matches.
In 2006, they drew with eventual runners-up France. Four years later, Switzerland defeated the eventual winners Spain 1-0 in their first match.
Yakin's side have suffered just one loss since November 2024 and even that was a narrow 4-3 defeat to Germany earlier this year.
Switzerland kept four clean sheets in six qualifying games, while Qatar conceded 24 goals in 10 games during round three, the most out of the 18 teams involved.
Qatar have scored only one goal across their previous five matches and breaching this Swiss defence should be beyond them.
Considering the contrast in quality between the two teams, Switzerland have a real chance to deliver a statement victory in California on Saturday.
In the recent 4-1 friendly win over fellow qualifiers Jordan, Switzerland won both halves and there is no doubt Yakin's side can get off to a flyer in their first match.
Indeed, Qatar have conceded within the first 20 minutes twice in their previous three matches, while suffering confidence-sapping defeats to Zimbabwe, Palestine and even Lebanon over the last 12 months.
With much tougher tests to come, Switzerland know that all three points against Qatar will give them an excellent chance of reaching the knockout stages for the fourth successive World Cup.
While Swiss talisman Breel Embolo will lead the line against Qatar, it is right winger Dan Ndoye who could be one to watch, especially in this opening match.
The Nottingham Forest star has been in excellent form for his country in recent months. Not only did he score against Germany in March, but the 25-year-old has added goals against Jordan and Australia in back-to-back friendly matches.
Those performances should be enough to convince Yakin that Ndoye is unleashed against Qatar and he could cause plenty of damage throughout the match.
He scored at Euro 2024, so performing on the biggest of stages isn't something new. As such, expect the winger to take advantage of a poor Qatari defence to score for the third successive game.
