Ivory Coast open up their World Cup campaign with an intriguing clash against Ecuador at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Monday.
The Elephants are one of the many dark horses at the tournament and are aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time.
Winners of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Ivorians can boast a talented squad filled with young talent such as Amad Diallo, Yan Diomande and Elye Wahi.
Ecuador finished behind Argentina in the South American World Cup qualifying table and they are set to make their fifth World Cup finals appearance.
La Tri made the last 16 in 2006, but haven’t been to the knockout stages since and that will be the aim this summer.
Goals weren’t exactly a staple for Ecuador during their World Cup qualifying campaign.
Indeed, across 18 matches, the South Americans scored only 14 times (the joint-lowest tally) and conceded just five times.
That was the best defensive record out of all 10 teams and that should stand them in good stead throughout the World Cup.
This bet would have landed in 14 of Ecuador’s 18 qualifying matches while six of their eight recent friendlies have seen under 2.5 goals.
The Ivory Coast may have been more prolific in front of goal in recent months, scoring seven times across their last three games.
Coming up against a resolute Ecuadorian defence, however, will certainly limit opportunities and this could be a low-scoring affair in Philadelphia.
Among the youngsters set to star at this World Cup, Yan Diomande is arguably one of the most exciting talents.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a superb domestic season for RB Leipzig, scoring 12 times and chipping in with eight assists in the Bundesliga.
He averaged 1.6 shots per game in the German top flight and despite not translating that form to the international stage, Diomande could enjoy a breakout tournament this summer.
As mentioned, Ecuador’s defence will be notoriously tough to breach, but the Ivorians will fancy their chances of creating a few opportunities throughout the game.
With that in mind, Diomande is likely to be unleashed from the start and back him to cause Hernan Galindez problems in the opposition goal.
Going back to Ecuador’s qualifying campaign, only two defeats were recorded and they both came within the opening seven matches.
That loss to Brazil in September 2024 is actually the last time Ecuador lost a match, winning eight and drawing 11 of their subsequent 19 games.
Ivory Coast will be buoyed by wins over South Korea, Scotland and in more impressive fashion, France, in recent months. the Africans haven’t featured at this stage since 2014 though and the occasions may overwhelm them.
Add in the fact that centre-back Evan Ndicka will be ruled out of the opening game due to injury.
As such, expect Enner Valencia and Co to spur the Ecuadorians on to victory.
