The third Grand Slam of the 2026 tennis season is already upon us, with Wimbledon taking center stage over the upcoming fortnight. Carlos Alcaraz is out of the tournament due to a wrist injury, so it appears to be Jannik Sinner’s title to lose at the All-England Club.
Sinner is the world No. 1 and defending champion, so there is a lot to like about his chances at Wimbledon. He is 37-3 this season with five Masters 1000 titles.
The Italian ace’s trek to his first Wimbledon trophy last summer included victories over Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals, Novak Djokovic in the semis and Alcaraz in the championship match. The Italian owns a 20-4 overall record at Wimbledon and has not lost prior to the quarterfinals since 2021.
All of that being said, Sinner is not necessarily a lock to go back-to-back in London – even if he is favored over the entire rest of the field. He was far less than 100 percent physically at the French Open and wilted amidst a Parisian heat wave and lost a five-setter to unheralded Juan Manuel Cerundolo in round two.
The top seed did not participate in any of the grass-court warmup tournaments for Wimbledon, so he has not played a single match since his exit from Roland Garros.
If Sinner stumbles, there are plenty of realistic challengers waiting in the wings to capitalize. Djokovic cannot be discounted even at 39 years old, Shelton won the Stuttgart title a couple of weeks ago and Alexander Zverev is coming off his long-awaited first Grand Slam triumph at the French Open.
Even with Alcaraz, Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Rune missing, the men’s field remains quite deep.
Here is the short list of favorites to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title:
Jannik Sinner -175
Novak Djokovic +500
Alexander Zverev +850
Ben Shelton +1600
Taylor Fritz +2000
Jack Draper +3300
Jakub Mensik +3300
Matteo Berrettini +5000
Frances Tiafoe +5000
Alexander Bublik +5000
Felix Auger Aliassime +5000
Zverev finds himself at the bottom of the bracket as the No. 2 seed, which means he cannot meet Sinner until the championship match. That, of course, gives the 29-year-old German a massive advantage before the tournament even begins.
The German did not face a single opponent ranked better than 14th on his way to victory at Roland Garros and there is a decent chance that he enjoys a similarly favorable path at the All-England Club – at least until the final.
Although Zverev has historically struggled on grass relative to other surfaces, you have to like his chances of reversing that trend. One, he has newfound confidence as a Grand Slam champion. Two, he is serving at a higher percentage in 2026 than he has ever served before.
If that continues on the lawns of London, Zverev could go all the way.
Fritz has struggled with knee tendinitis throughout the 2026 campaign, but he is well-rested after playing only two matches on clay.
The seventh-ranked American appeared to be 100 percent physically during his grass-court preparation, which featured runner-up finishes in both Stuttgart and Halle.
For the past seven years or so, Fritz has quite simply been one of the best grass-court players in the world. He is a four-time Eastbourne champion, won the Stuttgart title last summer and has reached at least the quarterfinals in three of his last four trips to Wimbledon – including the semifinals in 2025.
This is obviously a longshot play, but it is one that has outstanding value. After all, it only takes one upset of Sinner – just like we witnessed at Roland Garros – for the tournament to get blown completely wide open. Basically everyone has a chance if Sinner goes out early.
Auger-Aliassime is among those who would have a great chance to capitalize. The Canadian’s Wimbledon results have been surprisingly poor throughout his career, but there is no reason why his game style should not work well on grass.
He likes to keep points short with a big serve-forehand combination, a strategy that he can implement to perfection on a fast surface.
