Victor Wembayama has taken over the NBA in 2025, and is outshining all of the NBA's negative press.
2025 may be the last year of this decade that San Antonio Spurs sensation Victor Wembanyama is not the preseason MVP favorite, and for good reason.
The Spurs are 3-0 to start the young NBA regular season, and Wembanyama has already made history.
The French phenom just became the first player in NBA History to record 100+ points and 15+ blocks in the first three games of the regular season.
Wemby is averaging 33.3 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 6.0 blocks per game through the first three games, and looks unstoppable
Since the start of the 2021-22 season, there have been 18 games in which a player blocked eight or more shots. Only two players have done it more than once. Brook Lopez has done it twice, and Wembanyama has done it nine times.
Even more impressive, Wemby didn't enter the league until 2023.
Drafted first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor stands at 7'5" and boasts an unbelievable 8'0" wingspan. At just 21-years-old, some question if he's even done growing.
Victor is not the tallest player to ever play in the league. That record is held by Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol who stood 7'7". He may on the other hand be the most talented 7-footer that the league has ever seen.
He doesn't just block shots with ease, he also possess an impressive handle, and shooting stroke.
Victor is currently the tallest player in the NBA, making him a favorite anywhere around the hoop on offense and defense. What's so special about him is that he can do more than just reach over people. He also creates space off the dribble, shoots over people, and blows by defenders with a quick (and long) first step.
It's typically difficult for players of his stature to dribble the ball effectively because it has to go so far down to the ground on each dribble, but Wembanyama has already crossed up the likes of former Defensive Player of the Year Anthony Davis this season.
The Frenchman is also shooting 36.4% from behind the arc in three games, and has a 33.9% career three-point percentage.
The last two players to take the league by storm like this (Steph Curry and Nikola Jokic) have rarely dunked in their careers - Wemby can do it standing up.
NBA fans around the globe are living in Wemby's world, and its only the beginning.
At just 21, Victor has even more room to grow, but more importantly has more room to develop.
Wemby entered the season fifth in MVP odds at +1400. He is now second at +275.
He is also -230 to win the 2025/26 Defensive Player of the Year.
