Ben Shelton 2026 Roland Garros French Open Prediction

A strong season has seen Ben Shelton leapfrog Taylor Fritz as American number one and the world number six will be keen to showcase his talents in the second Grand Slam of the season.

Shelton, despite still being only 23 years of age, has made the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and the US Open and he will be determined to go deep at the French Open to add to his growing list of achievements.

The Floridian resident enjoyed a career best effort at Roland Garros last season, having made the fourth round before being beaten in four sets by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.

Quicker conditions would suit the power-packed style of Shelton better but he claimed his second clay-court title at the Bavarian Open in Germany in April and he should be confident of where his game is at.

Ben Shelton to win first quarter (+2200)

It will be a tough ask for Shelton to make his breakthrough at Grand Slam level at the French Open but he will feel that he is one of the few who can serve up a challenge to tournament favourite Jannik Sinner.

Having been seeded 13th at last season’s French Open, Shelton finds himself seeded fifth this year, albeit helped by the absence of world number two Alcaraz.

However, that shows the continued improvement of Shelton and he heads to Roland Garros in fine form having claimed his fifth title on the ATP Tour only last month on the clay in Munich.

This slower surface may not play to Shelton’s strengths but three of his seven finals have been on clay, highlighting his versatility.

The 23-year-old has been in excellent touch ever since losing to Sinner in the Australian Open quarter-final, winning 13 of his 19 matches, and taking titles in Dallas and Munich.

As many of the elite do, peaking for the showpiece events will be the aim, and challenging for Grand Slam silverware will be Shelton’s next step.

The problem facing Shelton is that he is in the same quarter of the draw as Sinner, who is on a 29-match winning streak having reeled off Masters 1000 titles at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.

But that does mean that the Italian world number one has been kept busy and the French Open is the only Grand Slam that has so far evaded him.

Shelton looks Sinner’s toughest test in the top half of the draw and the American will be looking for smooth early progress, which starts with an opening-round showdown against inexperienced Spaniard Daniel Merida.

Raphael Collignon or Aleksandar Vukic would await in round two, with Tallon Griekspoor or Stefanos Tsitsipas likely to be his opponent in the third round.

But 2021 French Open runner-up Tsitsipas is not the force he once was, so Shelton should at least be eyeing a last-16 spot, where Alexander Bublik or fellow American Frances Tiafoe may lie in wait.

However, Shelton would be a strong favourite against any of those opponents and, if Sinner is feeling any fatigue in the quarter-finals, then he looks ready to pounce.

That may be easier said than done but the prices may underrate Shelton’s chances and they have never met on clay, which is something that could be the great leveller.

The fifth seed is +10000 to win his maiden Grand Slam title but it will be hard to make his breakthrough on the Parisian dirt and the +2200 on offer to reach the semi-finals may appeal most, especially given a quarter-final showdown with Sinner would take some recovering from and he has to prove he has the temperament to go all the way at the top level.
