The NBA Summer League action continues in Vegas and San Antonio Spurs are still in with a chance of reaching the playoff round ahead of their final preliminary game against Utah Jazz.
The Jazz enjoyed a good run in the Salt Lake City Summer League as they won all three of their games, but Vegas has been tougher on this team.
Utah lost their first two games before picking up a win over Chicago Bulls and they’ll be ending their stint in Vegas with a consolation game next whatever the result of their match-up with the Spurs.
The Jazz went into their Summer League campaign with a strong group of players - spearheaded by No. 2 draft pick Darryn Peterson and Ace Bailey, who is coming off the back of a solid rookie season.
However, Peterson sat out against the Bulls last time out and Bailey has picked up an injury. Bailey's injury isn't thought to be serious, but it is highly unlikely he will be risked for a preseason game.
Peterson is the +280 favorite for the Rookie of the Year award and his performances in the Summer League indicate that is justified.
The Jazz have seen enough from the Kansas Jayhawks product and his work is probably done for the summer as he looks capable of forming part of their starting backcourt pairing for the season ahead.
Blake Hinson, Bez Mbeng and Hayden Gray will be involved, but without Bailey and Peterson the Jazz look worth opposing against a Spurs team who still have a point to prove.
The Spurs squad is formed of a group of players who are bidding to secure rotation minutes or two-way deals in the season ahead.
Center Tarris Reed should be back in the lineup after he was rested against Milwaukee Bucks in the last game and that should provide the team with a boost.
Reed averaged nine rebounds per game for Uconn last season and has 19 in total across two games in the Summer League.
The Spurs come into the game after back-to-back wins and have a chance to finish in the top four and secure a playoff place, whereas Utah appear to be a team winding down after a busier period.
Therefore, taking a chance on San Antonio as the slight underdogs looks the best angle in this Vegas Summer League game.
The San Antonio team that reached the NBA Finals Series last season were a strong defensive unit and this youthful incarnation of Spurs have shown similar attributes.
San Antonio conceded 93 points in defeat to Atlanta Hawks in their opening game, but since then have restricted New York Knicks to 49 points and the Bucks to 80.
The Spurs haven't been scoring heavily themselves either and so far their highest scoring game in the Summer League produced 170 points.
Utah's games have been more entertaining but without Peterson they look far weaker in offense.
The 19-year-old scored 100 points across his four preseason games in Salt Lake City and Vegas and without him the Jazz reached just 80 in total in their victory over the Bulls.
The Spurs look limited offensively but solid in defense, while Utah are missing the player who has led their offense over the summer and that could result in a low scoring game.
Backing the under option looks like the way to go in the total points market.
