Shane Bieber Injury Update: Blue Jays Starter Headed to IL

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Shane Bieber has been playing well recently, but he's headed towards a stint on the IL with right teres major inflammation.

Affecting the shoulder and upper arm, symptoms of teres inflammation include sharp pain and swelling around the area. With 30 games left in the Blue Jays' season, Bieber was placed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday, retroactive to Friday, August 21.

On Thursday the 20th, Bieber threw seven strong innings against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing just one run and striking out seven. That performance came on the heels of another terrific outing on Aug. 14 against the New York Yankees in which Bieber threw six innings of one-run ball and fanned five. Five of his last seven starts have consisted of at least 5.2 innings pitched and one run or less allowed.

Overall for the season, Bieber is 5-2 with a 4.37 ERA across 11 starts. He missed the first two-plus months of the season with right elbow inflammation and made his season debut in late June. He's dealt with several injuries ever since his dominant reign in Cleveland, starting just 20 games since the beginning of the 2024 season. He's scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the year.

In response to putting Bieber on the 15-day IL, the Blue Jays recalled right-hander Chad Dallas from Triple-A Buffalo. Dallas has allowed seven earned runs in 7.2 innings pitched in his rookie season this year.
