After taking the series opener in the Bronx, the visiting Boston Red Sox look to clinch their third straight road series win when they face the New York Yankees on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. ET.
It has been a nightmare of a season so far for the Red Sox, who are 27-35 overall and 11 games back of the American East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. They are a league-worst 10-21 at home, which is tied for the second-worst record at Fenway after 31 games in club history.
Fortunately, Boston is on the road, where it is 17-14 overall. The Red Sox have won three straight, 6 of 7, and 10 of 13 away from home, including the 5-3 decision over the Yankees.
Willson Contreras homered for the second straight game and drove in three runs, while Austin Monasterio homered as the Sox tallied more runs than they did in a three-game sweep by New York in Fenway in April.
Sonny Gray won his fifth straight decision since returning from a hamstring injury, and three relievers held the Yankees hitless over the final 2.2 innings.
New York fell to 1-3 without three-time MVP Aaron Judge, who was just placed on the injured list after incurring a stress fracture to his right first rib. He is expected to be re-evaluated in four to six weeks.
The sky is already falling in Boston. New Yorkers are fine for now, especially with the Knicks coming home with a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals. But Judge’s absence will certainly produce more consternation if the losses add up.
Warren should at least put a temporary halt to those fears in this clash. He is 7-1 with a 3.22 ERA and is tied for the team lead in wins with seven, while the Yankees have won 10 of his 12 starts.
Last Sunday, Warren allowed no earned runs on six hits while striking out five in six innings of work in a 13-8 decision over the Athletics. He has won three straight decisions, and the Yankees have been victorious in each of his last four starts.
The Red Sox will counter with Ranger Suarez, a prized free agent acquisition from Philadelphia. He’s been up and down in his Boston debut. Suarez was hammered in his first two starts, but followed that by allowing one run or fewer in 6 of 7 starts while posting an ERA of 1.12.
However, his last two outings have been mediocre, including last Sunday, when he allowed four runs on eight hits in a no-decision. He is 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA overall.
Look for the Yankees to ride Warren’s arm and get the bats going later in Suarez’s start to win and cover the 1.5-run line as favorites.
These teams combined for 15 runs in their first three-game series in April, with the host Red Sox scoring just three of them.
The two teams posted their highest total in four matchups this season on Friday night, and they should build on that again.
Look for the Red Sox and Yankees to both have the bats working and play to the Over.
