Tampa Bay Rays and Colorado Rockies are set for an interleague matchup on Monday night at Coors Field.
With a record of 65-46, the Rays find themselves leading the AL East with the best record in the American League. They seem poised for a deep playoff run, and it will be interesting to see what moves they make before this afternoon’s trade deadline.
On the other side, the Rockies own the worst record in the National League at 45-67. It’s been another long season in Denver, and things won’t get any easier going up against Tampa Bay in this one.
First pitch is set for 8:40 p.m. ET.
This is a series that the Rays have dominated in recent seasons. Since MLB’s new scheduling format was implemented a few years ago, the Rays have won seven of their nine matchups against the Rockies going back to 2023.
Heading into this contest, Tampa Bay seems to have the edge once again.
The Rays will send Ian Seymour to the mound, and he has put together back-to-back strong outings. The 27-year-old left-hander has allowed just two earned runs on seven hits over his last two starts and 10.2 innings of work. He also has racked up 11 strikeouts to go along with just two walks in that span.
The Rockies are set to hand the ball to Michael Lorenzen. The veteran right-hander is enduring a rough first season in Colorado, as he owns a 6.54 ERA and 1.18 WHIP through 23 appearances. Over his last two starts, Lorenzen has surrendered nine earned runs on 15 hits over the course of 7.2 innings.
His recent struggles and Seymour’s recent success put the Rockies behind the 8-ball heading into this one.
The Rockies are coming off a three-game sweep over the Royals in which they out-scored Kansas City 23-8. However, the Royals are among the worst teams in the American League and have struggled to find the win column all season long.
Tampa Bay presents a much tougher matchup, and the Rays are expected to pick up a road win on Monday night.
As previously mentioned, Lorenzen is having a rough first season with the Rockies. Like most pitchers out there, he has struggled when pitching at Coors Field.
Entering this contest, Lorenzen owns a 8.34 ERA to go along with a whopping .354 BAA over 10 starts in Denver. The Rays aren’t an offensive juggernaut, but they have plenty of strong pieces in place that should be able to take advantage of Lorenzen’s home woes.
It’s also worth noting that the Rockies’ bullpen ERA of 4.97 is the worst in the National League. The Rays should be able to have a strong day at the plate.
Seymour has been a reliable arm for Tampa Bay, but he has been a slightly different pitcher on the road than at home. Seymour sports a steady 3.50 ERA at home, but a 5.63 ERA when pitching away from Tropicana Field.
The Colorado offense is in a groove after plating 23 runs against Kansas City, and they should be able to find enough success at the plate to take this one over the listed total of 11.5.
