The Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers are set for an interleague matchup on Wednesday, June 17 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Dodgers have taken the first two games of this series by scores of 4-3 and 1-0 and will be looking to complete the sweep in Wednesday’s finale against a despondent Tampa.
First pitch is set for 3:10 p.m. ET.
Tampa Bay is in a rut right now and they head into their sixth-successive away match having lost four of their last five games.
A 2-1 series loss to the Los Angeles Angels has been followed by back-to-back defeats at the Dodgers and life will not get any easier on Wednesday.
Shohei Ohtani has been in supreme form for LA this season, allowing just 36 hits over the course of 67.2 innings. Opponents are hitting a measly .154 with a .473 OPS against him, and he is set to face a Rays lineup that has scored just 2.8 runs per game on their current run of five-game away period.
Tampa Bay starting pitcher Shane McClanahan posted a stellar 1.41 ERA over six starts in the month of May, but he is off to a rough start in June. Through two starts to begin the new month, he has allowed 16 hits and eight earned runs over 9.0 innings. Not surprisingly, the Rays have lost both of those games.
McClanahan has also had his struggles on the road. His ERA goes from 2.05 at home to 4.32 when pitching on his travels this season. Furthermore, his BAA jumps from .189 to .242 away from Tampa Bay.
The Dodgers are a strong 24-12 at home, while the Rays are less than .500 with a 17-20 mark on the road. Playing at home, back the Dodgers in this one.
Runs were hard to come by in the first two games of this series, and more of the same should be expected in Wednesday’s finale.
Ohtani has been lights out on the mound this season. He’s been at his best at Dodger Stadium, as he owns a minuscule 0.87 ERA to go along with a .118 BAA over five home starts.
The Rays have struggled to find a groove at the plate in June, as they rank 25th in baseball in terms of total runs this month. Ohtani should be able to put together a strong outing on the mound for Los Angeles.
McClanahan hasn’t been at his best so far in June, but he is more than capable of turning things around.
Prior to his last two starts, McClanahan owned a solid 2.45 ERA entering the month of June. He’s still been able to find plenty of swings and misses with 13 strikeouts in 9.0 innings, and he is a proven veteran who knows how to bounce back.
Plus, it’s not like the Los Angeles lineup is setting the world on fire right now. They’ve plated just five total runs in this series and have been held to just 13 hits so far.
