The Red Sox vs. Yankees is the most storied rivalry in the history of baseball, and the two teams meet in the Wild Card round of the MLB playoffs for the second year in a row.
Game 1 will feature an exciting young pitching duel between Massachusetts native Cam Schlittler of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox rookie sensation Payton Tolle.
Schlittler announced himself on the national stage with impressive performances in last season’s playoffs. In 14⅓ postseason innings, Schlittler allowed just two earned runs, struck out 14 batters and walked none. During the 2026 regular season, the right-hander struck out 239 batters in 193⅔ innings and posted a 1.95 ERA, the lowest in the American League. He is also the favourite to win the AL Cy Young Award.
Tolle was also impressive this season. In 148⅔ innings, the big left-hander struck out 171 batters, posted a 3.03 ERA and recorded a 1.10 WHIP. Tolle was recently announced as the Game 1 starter ahead of veterans Sonny Gray and Ranger Suárez, and he expressed his excitement about the opportunity during the subsequent press conference.
Tolle embraces a loose and fun style, which he has credited with helping him succeed on the mound.
“I’ve tried trying to be super locked in [approach]. It just doesn’t work for me. I end up putting too much pressure on myself. I’ve just found that the way I work best is by trying to be comfortable and trying to smile as much as I can out there,” Tolle told the media.
The two pitchers will go head-to-head at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, September 29. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
