The New York Mets were established in 1961 and began playing in the National League in 1962.
They were founded to fill the void left by Brooklyn Dodgers an New York Giants. The nickname, "Mets" came from shortening their corporate name, the "New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc."
In December of 2024, The Mets made headlines signing Juan Soto, marking the largest contract in professional sports history. The contract aligns with the organizations commitment to creating a competitive roster and striving to be one of the best teams in the league.
The New York Mets compete in the National League. They are one of five teams in the East Division, with the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals, and Miami Marlins.
