Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions are eager to kick off the 2026 season, after missing the playoffs in 2025 with a 9-8 record.
The Lions have gone all-in on Jahmyr Gibbs by signing one of the best running backs in the NFL to a three-year, $67.5 million contract this offseason. Detroit did, however, have to break up 'Sonic' and 'Knuckles' by trading David Montgomery to the Houston Texans.
The New Orleans Saints have kept their core intact, with quarterback Tyler Shough primed to start his first full season in the NFL after making his first start in Week 9 last year.
The Saints signed experienced running back Travis Etienne Jr. this offseason to complement Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave. Etienne has rushed for 1,000+ yards in three of his first four seasons in the NFL and will allow 31-year-old Kamara to focus on specific third-down packages.
The last time the two teams played each other was in 2023, when the Lions beat the Saints 33-28 in New Orleans. Jared Goff found his two top targets in that game, Sam LaPorta (140 yards) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (49 yards), for a combined 189 yards and two touchdowns. Derek Carr was the quarterback for New Orleans, and Taysom Hill was the team's leading rusher with 59 yards on 13 carries.
The Saints secondary will have their hands full with this high-powered Detroit offense, especially Kool-Aid McKinstry, who will likely be tasked with covering St. Brown.
