The New England Patriots officially sign cornerback Christian Gonzalez to a record-breaking contract extension ahead of the NFL season.
After a long wait, the New England Patriots have finally locked down their shutdown cornerback, Christian Gonzalez, to a record-breaking four-year, $135 million contract. The deal includes $102 million guaranteed and makes 'Gonzo' the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
This deal is historic not just for Gonzalez, but also for the Patriots, who have extended a first-round draft pick for the first time since Dont'a Hightower, who was drafted in 2012.
Gonzalez had the opportunity to hold out or hold in this offseason, but the 24-year-old demonstrated maturity and professionalism by reporting to training camp while his management negotiated the contract with Patriots ownership.
Patriots fans have been calling for Robert Kraft to pay the cornerback throughout the offseason, having watched other teams secure their players much earlier. In August, the Seattle Seahawks signed their star corner, Devon Witherspoon, to a four-year, $132 million extension, which stood as the largest contract for a cornerback until the Patriots signed Gonzalez.
Gonzalez and Witherspoon went head-to-head in the Super Bowl last year and will meet again when the Patriots take on the Seahawks in the NFL season opener on Wednesday night.
