Friday night in the MLB kicks off the next installment of the Subway Series between the New York Yankees and New York Mets. These teams may be within different leagues in the MLB, but the rivalry is real.
This is the first meeting between the two this series, and both could really use a win. Last season’s MLB matchups resulted in a 3-3 split, but what does the 2026 version have in store? Here is our expert Yankees vs. Mets preview and prediction for Friday night.
The Yankees have now lost two-straight games, and six of their last eight. They are coming off an embarrassing 7-0 shutout loss to a beatable Baltimore Orioles club, but they now have a chance to wipe the slate clean with this new three-game series.
They are now 2.0 games from the AL East leaders in the Tampa Bay Rays, but the group is fed up and ready to start winning again.
The Mets meanwhile have had quite a disappointing season thus far. At 18-25, they sit at the bottom of the NL East and 11.5 games back on the Atlanta Braves.
They have won three straight games, sweeping the series against the Detroit Tigers in commanding fashion, but this does not convince much as the Tigers are really struggling. There is still a ton of pressure on this team, especially welcoming in the Yankees to their faithful but demanding fans.
This game brings an excellent pitching matchup of Cam Schlittler and Clay Holmes, and while both have been excellent, I give the edge to Schlittler as he has just been unbeatable, and is well within the conversation of the AL Cy Young race. He leads the way in front of a strong Yankees bullpen.
Furthermore, the Yankees round out with an offense that may be struggling, but can dominate at any given moment.
The Mets come into this game with the second-lowest runs per game average (3.74), and while their average is slightly better at home (4.14), securing runs will be a challenge. Their offense has been good of late, but I expect it to cool down against a solid Yankees defense and excellent bullpen.
They are facing off against elite Yankees pitcher Schlittler, who has given up an ERA of 1.35, WHIP of 0.81, and 59 strikeouts in 53.1 innings pitched. He has pitched beyond 5.2 innings in each of his last six meetings, averaging just under seven innings per game over that span. He will be giving the Mets offense issues all night.
The Yankees can be an offensive juggernaut at times, proven by their fourth-best runs per game average 5.07, but I don’t expect to see them run up the scoreboard.
They are averaging 2.67 runs per game over their last three, and averaging 3.83 runs when on the road. The Yankees will also see an excellent pitcher in veteran Clay Holmes who has posted a 1.86 ERA and 1.01 WHIP,
Not much needs to be said about the potential of an Aaron Judge home run on any given night. Judge is a four-time 52+ home run hitter and three-time AL Hank Aaron Award winner, and he currently leads the AL in home runs (16), which is second behind Kyle Schwarber (18) for the MLB lead.
Judge has now gone homerless in three straight games, and has just one in his last seven games. By no means is Judge in a slump, as he still has six hits over that span. However, he typically hits his home runs at a much higher pace than this, and a Friday night showdown at Citi Field has Judge HR written all over it.
The Yankees need a major spark from their leader as the team faces some adversity, and I think Judge will step up and help kickstart the team to a new winning stretch. What better way to do so than sending one deep.
