The University of Miami's defense powered its way to the College Football Playoff Championship, yet failed to win the ACC last year.
Darian Mensah is set to start at quarterback for his third school in three years, joining Mario Cristobal's Miami Hurricanes as the fourth-ranked quarterback in the transfer portal. Mensah makes the team heavy favourites to win the ACC this season.
Miami boasts a reigning ACC champion at quarterback and a roster that is significantly deeper than its conference rivals, even after star edge rushers Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor have left for the NFL.
Replicating Bain and Mesidor's production will be nearly impossible, as the two edge rushers combined for 22 sacks and ranked first and third in total sacks in the conference. Cristobal did bring in Damon Wilson II, a four-star transfer from Missouri and the fourth-highest-ranked defensive lineman in the transfer class.
In 2025, Wilson tallied nine sacks, leading Missouri in that category. On an improved defense in a weaker conference, the 21-year-old has every opportunity to thrive in Miami. Wilson will be joined by defensive tackles Keona Davis and Jarquez Carter, who also transferred to Miami this season. The trio has the potential to create another terrifying front four, similar to the one that powered its way to the 2025 National Championship game.
Stanford will have a difficult time against Miami on Friday night, and to make matters worse, the team is expected to be without four projected starters on the offensive side of the ball, including three offensive linemen—Niki Prongos, Simione Pale, and Aidan Kilstrom—due to injury.
Stanford won their first game of the season against Hawai'i in Week 0, beating the Rainbow Warriors 37-27. Quarterback Davis Warren passed for 310 yards in the opener, but he will be facing significantly more pressure against the enormous Miami defence. Running back Micah Ford will also have a much tougher job after rushing for 99 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries.
If the backup offensive linemen are able to hold their own against Miami's front, this game could be far closer than it is projected to be.
