JMU has lost some high-profile coaches over the past few seasons, including Kurt Cignetti (2019–2023) and Bob Chesney (2023–2025), and will play its first competitive game under former Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier on Saturday.
Napier is no stranger to high expectations after spending four seasons in the SEC, but he still has huge shoes to fill in Harrisonburg. Cignetti completely revamped the Dukes football program, leading them to three straight FCS playoff berths and overseeing the transition into FBS competition. Chesney then took over after Cignetti departed for Indiana and led JMU to an 11–1 record, a Sun Belt Conference Championship, and a College Football Playoff berth last season.
The Dukes lost their star quarterback, Alonza Barnett III, to UCF, and a number of other players from the offense followed Chesney to UCLA, including running back Wayne Knight. Napier has not yet announced who will start at quarterback in 2026, but he has two quality options to replace Barnett III at the position, such as redshirt sophomore JC Evans and Richmond transfer Camden Coleman.
The defensive side of the ball has also lost a significant amount of talent to the transfer portal, with many star players following Chesney to Southern California.
Liberty has not had quite as much turnover, but the Flames were not nearly as talented as JMU was in 2025. The Flames won just four games (4–8) and finished in the bottom half of Conference USA last year.
