The University of Miami's defense powered its way to the College Football Playoff Championship, yet failed to win the ACC. Duke secured the ACC title during the 2025/26 season, defeating Virginia in an overtime championship thriller.

Duke's star quarterback, Darian Mensah, has since transferred to Miami to play under Mario Cristobal. Consequently, Miami is the heavy favorite to win the ACC this season, boasting a reigning champion at quarterback and a roster that is significantly deeper than its conference rivals.

ACC Championship Contenders

Beyond Miami, SMU holds the shortest odds to win the ACC. The Mustangs finished with a 6-2 conference record last year and return senior quarterback Kevin Jennings for another campaign. Jennings has spent his entire career at SMU, showing improvement each season. Should he continue this trajectory, the Mustangs are well-positioned to challenge Miami for the ACC title.

Louisville and Clemson both finished with a 4-4 record in ACC play, yet each is expected to improve this season. Dabo Swinney lost quarterback Cade Klubnik to the NFL, but the long-time head coach remains confident in his first-year starter, Christopher Vizzina. Louisville finds itself in a similar position, with Lincoln Kienholz expected to make his first Division I start.

Virginia has also introduced a new quarterback, though Beau Pribula brings significant experience to the position after starting for Missouri in the SEC last season. Tony Elliott's side finished the regular season with the best record in the ACC last year (7-1) but narrowly missed the playoff after losing the ACC Championship game to Duke. The Cavaliers will undoubtedly be motivated to return to that game in 2026/27.

The rest of the ACC is experiencing significant turnover, particularly at Virginia Tech, which has appointed long-time Penn State head coach James Franklin. Franklin transformed the Nittany Lions into a premier college football program. It remains to be seen whether he can replicate that success with the Hokies.
