After a successful amateur career, Thurman turned pro at the age of 18 in 2007, making his debut in Tampa, Florida, against Kensky Rodney.
A well-placed body shot helped Thurman record a first-round victory, and it was the start of a hugely successful few years for the fighter.
Thurman won his first eight fights by knockout before an accidental clash of heads during a contest against Francisco Garcia saw his ninth bout ruled a no contest.
As his career developed, Thurman adjusted his tactics, moving away from being just a "puncher", and he soon started to improve his array of skills as he started to enter the world rankings.
He won the WBO Inter-Continental welterweight title after a hard-fought win over Jan Zaveck in March 2013 before winning the Interim WBA welterweight title four months later after stopping Diego Gabriel Chaves.

Thurman's peak years came between 2015 and 2019 when he enjoyed further victories over Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia, who would also eventually win world titles of their own.
A win over Josesito Lopez in January 2019 continued his reign as WBA champion, but he was beaten six months later by Manny Pacquiao.
Thurman was dropped in round one but showed heart and courage to hear the final bell before losing a split decision.
He held the WBA crown from 2015 to 2019, while he held the WBC strap in 2017.
