Putting a run of wins together has been challenging for Ortiz and he began his amateur career with three defeats in his first four fights.
That streak was followed by five wins in six outings, the sole reverse coming to Isidro Ochoa in the quarter-finals of the 2014 USA Youth National Championships before three more successes and then a defeat in the semis at the 2015 US National Championships.
The Technician's disappointment in Spokane, WA, preceded a run of five straight victories before losing in Las Vegas to Teofimo Lopez, a fighter who has become something of a nemesis.
Ortiz then grabbed another five victories before back-to-back losses against Jaron Ennis and Abraham Nova but got revenge on Nova in the 2016 New England Golden Gloves final, in what proved to be his final amateur fight.
Overall, his amateur record read 20-9-0.
While Ortiz struggled to combine wins in the amateurs, he had no such issue in the professional ranks. The man from Massachusetts stormed to wins in his first 14 paid fights, picking up a series of minor belts. That includes winning the WBC Youth World Lightweight title by beating Ricardo Quiroz as well as adding the WBC Youth Intercontinental Super Lightweight belt with a victory over Romain Couture.
The vacant WBC USA Silver Lightweight strap followed thanks to a win over Segawa Sulaiman before his victory run ended with a draw against Joseph Adorno in April 2021.
He was lucky to draw against Adorono after going down in both the second and seventh rounds, but he bounced back with Unanimous Decision wins over Nahir Albright for the Vacant North American Boxing Federation Lightweight Title and then added the IBF USBA Lightweight strap by beating Jamel Herring.
Ortiz's progress resulted in him finally getting a shot at one of the sport's biggest stars in the form of Vasiliy Lomachenko in October 2022.
Ukraine's double Olympic champion lost his WBA (Super) and WBO Lightweight belts to Lopez in October 2020 but returned with wins over Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey before taking on Ortiz.
Lomachenko struggled to find his rhythm early on, with Ortiz using his three-and-a-half-inch reach advantage to edge the early rounds but the former world champion came through for a Unanimous Decision victory.
Again it was a case for what might have been for Ortiz, who struggled to step up a level when required.
He returned after 11 months away to beat Antonio Moran and earn a shot at the WBO super-lightweight world title, only to lose for the second time in the paid ranks as he went down to old foe Lopez in Las Vegas in February 2024.
Ortiz's next fight has yet to be confirmed.
Ortiz's last fight resulted in a unanimous decision defeat to Teofimo Lopez in Las Vegas on February 8th.
Making the first defence of his WBO super-lightweight world title, Lopez dominated the fight, with Ortiz struggling to test his opponent in the early exchanges.
The challenger's face was starting to swell by the start of the seventh and things were made worse for him when a clash of heads led to the area above his left eye starting to bleed.
Ortiz had the better of the later rounds, landing some strong combinations but left himself with too much to do as Lopez retained his belt, albeit the decision was booed by the fans who thought The Technician had been hard done by on the judges' cards.
Ortiz was born on April 28th, 1996 and is 27-years-old.
The Technician stands at 5'8" and weighed in for his fight against Lopez at 139.5 lbs.
Ortiz's net worth is listed by different outlets as being between $2-3m, although sources say he could be worth around the $5m mark.
