No. 24-seed Tommy Paul won his first round matchup against Rinky Hijikata in four sets, setting up a second round battle against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego at Roland Garros.
Paul won his first clay-court title at the 2026 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in early April, giving him some confidence and momentum heading into the clay-court French Open.
The former No. 8 ranked player in the world (now No. 18) made the quarterfinal at Roland Garros last year before losing to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. It was his best finish at the tournament in his career, and with Alcaraz (and now Daniil Medvedev) out, Paul has a chance to advance even furthur.
First, of course, he'll have to get through Sonego - the 60th ranked player in the world. He reached the quarterfinal at the Australian Open in 2025, but overall, Sonego hasn't been in his best form going 3-6 in 2026 and far away from his career-best ranking of No. 21 in 2021.
The two have matched up against each other three different times, with Paul winning two. The American beat the Italian at the 2024 US Open in their most recent matchup, and they each won one in 2021.
