The World Cup's Golden Glove award recognizes the tournament's best goalkeeper.
The prestigious award was originally named the "Lev Yashin Award" in honor of the Soviet goalkeeper, but it was renamed to the "Golden Glove" in 2010.
The award is voted upon by the FIFA Technical Study Group which aims to recognize the best goalie of the tournament based on their performance throughout the entire tournament. Typically, it will go to the goalie of either the first, second, or third place team.
While the "Golden Glove" is dedicated strictly to goalies, they are still eligible for the Golden Ball as well. So far, only Germany's Oliver Kahn in 2002 won both awards in the same tournament.
Year | Player | Country | Clean Sheets |
1994 | Michel Preud'homme | Belgium | 2 |
1998 | Fabien Barthez | France | 5 |
2002 | Oliver Kahn | Germany | 5 |
2006 | Gianluigi Buffon | Italy | 5 |
2010 | Iker Casillas | Spain | 5 |
2014 | Manuel Neuer | Germany | 4 |
2018 | Thibaut Courtois | Belgium | 3 |
2022 | Emiliano Martinez | Argentina | 3 |
Four goalies have put together five clean sheets in a single tournament - a tremendous feat.
Fabien Barthez, playing in his home country of France in 1998, didn't allow a goal in the Round of 16, quarterfinal, and final to help France claim the World Cup.
Kahn shut out Paraguay in the Round of 16, the US in the quarterfinal, and South Korea in the semifinal, though he and his squad gave up three goals to Brazil in the final.
Italy's Gianluigi Buffon only gave up one goal after the group stage round. He conceded it against France in the final, though Italy still managed to win off of penalties (5-3).
Iker Casillas of Spain perhaps had the most impressive run of them all. After the group stage round, he shutout Portugal, Paraguay, Germany, and the Netherlands in four consecutive elimination matches to lead Spain to a World Cup win in 2010.
Most recently, Argentina's Emiliano Martinez had a fine run, highlighted by a clean sheet in the semifinal vs. Croatia.
