Two of the brightest stars on the women's tour, Coco Gauff and Marta Kostyuk, are set to face off in a highly anticipated quarterfinal at the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati.
Kostyuk enters the match following a hard-fought comeback victory over Mirra Andreeva, while Gauff secured her spot with a comfortable win against Marie Bouzkova. With a semi-final berth and a significant confidence boost ahead of the US Open on the line, the stakes are high for both players.
Coco Gauff is still searching for her first title of the 2026 season. The American has had a strong year, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, the semifinals in Dubai, and the finals of two WTA 1000 events in Miami and Rome. She also made a deep run at Wimbledon, advancing to the semifinals before falling to Karolina Muchova.
More recently, Gauff reached the semifinals in Toronto, where she was defeated by Elena Rybakina. As the fourth seed in Cincinnati, she received a first-round bye. Her opening match proved challenging, as she had to rally from a set down to overcome Liudmila Samsonova 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Gauff then defeated fellow American Ann Li 6-1, 7-6(3) before dispatching Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16.
The 2026 season has been the most successful of Marta Kostyuk's career to date. The Ukrainian started the year by reaching the final in Brisbane, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka. However, her breakthrough came on the clay courts. Kostyuk first captured the title in Rouen, defeating compatriot Veronika Podrez in the final, before securing the biggest win of her career in Madrid, where she beat Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 to claim her maiden WTA 1000 title.
Her strong clay season continued with a historic semi-final appearance at the French Open. She matched that result at Wimbledon, where she was eventually eliminated by Linda Noskova. In Cincinnati, Kostyuk also had a first-round bye. She needed three sets to get past Sofia Kenin (4-6, 6-3, 7-5) and then beat Sloane Stephens 7-5, 7-5. In the round of 16, she staged another impressive comeback against fifth-seed Mirra Andreeva, dropping the first set 4-6 before storming back to win 6-0, 6-2. This marks her first-ever quarterfinal appearance in Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati clash will be the sixth meeting between Gauff and Kostyuk. The American holds a narrow 3-2 lead in their head-to-head record, but the Ukrainian won their most recent encounter. Their first match was in Adelaide in 2022, where Gauff won in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 6-3).
They faced each other twice in 2024: Gauff prevailed in the Australian Open quarterfinals, but Kostyuk got her revenge in the quarterfinals on the clay of Stuttgart, winning a tight battle 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(6). Gauff later won their match in Wuhan 6-4, 6-1. Their last duel was on February 11, 2025, in Doha, where Kostyuk won decisively 6-2, 7-5.
