US Open Men's Final: Alexander Zverev vs. Ben Shelton Predictions & Best Bets

The 2026 US Open Men’s Final promises to deliver a spectacle to match its surroundings at what should be a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday night.

Alexander Zverev, the world No.2 and top seed, chases his second Grand Slam title of the season, against America’s new great men’s hope Ben Shelton.

Zverev’s run in Flushing Meadows can be split into two contrasting parts, the first being all about survival.

The German spent over nine hours on court in rounds one and two, winning both in five sets. But from round three onward he has been utterly dominant, claiming straight‑sets wins over Alejandro Tabilo, Luciano Darderi, Botic van de Zandschulp and Karen Khachanov.

Shelton’s path has been just as dramatic with the 23-year-old coming back from a set down against Tallon Griekspoor, seeing off Hubert Hurkacz and Denis Shapovalov in four before crushing Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last 16.

He then stunned defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five‑set epic that ended at 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in tournament history.

The big-serving American’s four‑set win over Frances Tiafoe in the semis was almost as impressive as he followed up the biggest win of his career in four sets.

Shelton has a shot at becoming the first American man to win the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2003, but Zverev has won all five of their previous contests and dropped only one set.

Alexander Zverev vs. Ben Shelton betting picks and predictions

Zverev -1.5 Match Spread (Games) (-120)

It may feel like the storyline for a long-awaited home winner is written in the stars and most of the the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium will be willing it to come true.

Shelton has already achieved the best Grand Slam result of his career so he can play with a freedom and fearlessness that makes him dangerous.

But when you strip away the emotion and look at the cold, hard facts, it’s impossible to ignore Zverev’s superior claims to the title.

The German has more experience of these occasions, an unblemished head-to-head record and ought to be arriving in the final with an edge in freshness.

It will be Zverev’s third straight Grand Slam final appearance and his second crack at winning the US Open, six years on from a bitter five-set defeat to Dominic Thiem in the Flushing Meadows showpiece.

Shelton had never made it beyond a major semifinal before Friday’s win over Tiafoe and his Grand Slam results this year before this have been underwhelming.

The 5‑0 head-to-head lead enjoyed by Zverev doesn’t quite tell the full story either as the German has won 10 of 11 sets they have played and claimed 16 of 21 points on Shelton’s second serve in their last meeting.

It would seem as though the French Open champion has figured out Shelton’s patterns. His flat, heavy backhand neutralizes Shelton’s forehand, and his return on the second serve consistently exposes the American’s weakness.

The physical factor cannot be ignored either with Shelton having played a five‑set quarterfinal that ended at 3:33 a.m., then a four‑set semifinal two days later.

Zverev, meanwhile, cruised past Khachanov in straight sets and has had a cleaner second week.

Shelton will bring firepower, but Zverev should settle quickly in his sixth Grand Slam final and ease to a win that covers the -1.5-game handicap.

Over 42.5 games (-120)

This line feels safe to go over if the match goes beyond three sets given the serving power on both sides of the net.

Shelton’s enormous serve regularly hits 150mph and is currently among the biggest in the sport.

The American will generate cheap holds even if Zverev controls the rallies in his usual style.

The No.2 seed’s serve has been exceptional since the quarterfinals, and Shelton’s return game is still not elite enough to consistently break him.

Add in the likelihood of at least one tiebreak, and the over becomes very appealing.

Most Double Faults – Shelton (+225)

Both players rely on huge serves — Zverev to set up points and Shelton needing to make up for his relative struggles on return — so we should expect both men to take risks, and both can throw in the occasional double fault.

Although their double-fault numbers are similar this year, Zverev has produced fewer in almost all of the relevant circumstances.

His 2.4% double-fault rate produces an average of 1.6 per match on hard courts while Shelton’s higher rate of 3.1% has seen him double fault 2.3 times per match on this surface.

Against top‑10 opponents, Zverev’s double‑fault rate drops, while Shelton’s rises and their rate becomes even more divergent when facing tall opponents.

The American has served more double faults in two of their last three meetings with the other one tied in that respect.
