Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes are set for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinals playoff series Monday night.
The Hurricanes took a 1-0 series lead thanks to a 3-0 win in Game 1 Saturday, with Logan Stankovan scoring a pair of goals and Frederik Andersen turning aside all 19 shots he faced to earn the shutout win.
Heading into Game 2 in Raleigh, will the Flyers even up the series or will the Hurricanes take a commanding 2-0 lead?
The Hurricanes may have controlled Game 1 en route to a 3-0 victory, but don't be surprised if the Flyers come out firing and put forth a spirited effort in Game 2.
The Flyers have been a very resilient team over the last few months and they have done a great job avoiding consecutive defeats. In fact, Philly ended the regular season by going a strong 7-1-0 following a loss.
Rick Tocchet has done a great job of getting the most out of his team following a loss and, while the 'Canes present a tough challenge, the Flyers should come out with a solid game plan in Game 2.
Despite the loss, Philadelphia put forth a commendable effort in Game 1. They held the Hurricanes to 22 shots on goal in Game 1 and controlled the face-off dot 35-28.
They also were the more physical team, dishing out 49 hits compared to Carolina’s 30. That physical approach can be very beneficial when going up against the well-rounded Hurricanes.
Philadelphia will need to get more offensive pressure in the offensive zone and make life as uncomfortable as possible for Andersen.
The veteran netminder has been solid this postseason, but he's also been a beneficiary of a stout defense in front of him.
If Philly can pot an early goal and get Carolina playing on its heels a bit, look for the Flyers to make this one very interesting.
Game 1 produced just three total goals and all were scored by the Hurricanes. While another shutout seems unlikely, Game 2 could produce another low-scoring result.
Both defenses were strong in Game 1, as neither offense was able to find bursts of sustained pressure. In total, Carolina mustered up just 19 shots on goal, while Philadelphia had 22.
Furthermore, both power plays struggled, with each man advantage going 0-for-4 on the night. That follows a common theme for these teams in the postseason.
Philadelphia’s power play is operating at a measly 9.5% in the playoffs, while Carolina isn't doing much better with a power play conversion rate of 10.5%.
After being shut out in Game 1, the Flyers have now scored just five total goals over their last four games.
They have the talent to get things back on track, but expecting them to suddenly burst through for an offensive explosion seems like a tough ask.
All in all, Game 2 has the makings of another low-scoring contest.
