For many teams competing in the Copa Libertadores, the thin air of high-altitude venues is one of the most daunting challenges in the continental tournament.
While a nightmare for visiting clubs, especially those from Brazil, it serves as a powerful ally for certain home teams in Central and South America.
Here's a look at the highest-altitude venues in the tournament.
Following a successful social media campaign, Always Ready received CONMEBOL's approval to host matches in El Alto. Their home ground, Estadio Villa Ingenio, is recognized as the second-highest stadium in the world, presenting a severe challenge for any visiting team.
Altitude: 13,615 feet (4,150 meters)
Capacity: 25,000
A familiar fortress for both club and national teams, the Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz is featured prominently during the tournament. Local clubs Bolívar and The Strongest share this stadium.
Altitude: 11,752 feet (3,582 meters)
Capacity: 41,143
Known as "La Caldera del Sur" (The Cauldron of the South), the Estadio Gonzalo Pozo Ripalda is home to Aucas in southern Quito.
Altitude: 9,406 feet (2,867 meters)
Capacity: 18,799
El Nacional, the third-largest domestic club in Ecuador, is another team from the capital participating in Copa Libertadores. They play their home matches at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, also in Quito.
Altitude: 9,127 feet (2,782 meters)
Capacity: 35,258
After winning Copa Sudamericana a few years ago, LDU Quito leverages their home-field advantage. The club, which plays at the stadium popularly known as Casa Blanca, is the only team from an altitude above 2,500 meters to have won the Copa Libertadores.
Altitude: 8,970 feet (2,734 meters)
Capacity: 41,575
Cochabamba is another high-altitude Bolivian city that hosts Libertadores matches. Club Aurora plays at the Estadio Félix Capriles, a venue also used by local rivals Jorge Wilstermann.
Altitude: 8,422 feet (2,567 meters)
Capacity: 32,000
Estadio El Campín in Bogotá, Colombia is a consistent venue for key matches during the tournament's main phase.
Altitude: 8,376 feet (2,553 meters)
Capacity: 39,512
Despite its stadium being named after a city at sea level, Independiente del Valle also benefits from playing at high altitude. The Estadio Banco Guayaquil is located in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito.
Altitude: 8,258 feet (2,517 meters)
Capacity: 12,000
The effects of playing at these heights are felt every season by teams that are not accustomed to the altitude.
These high-altitude stadiums continue to be a significant hurdle not only for Brazilian clubs but also for teams from other low-lying countries like Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, making the thin air a key factor in the premier club competition in LATAM.
