Dallas Mavericks outstanding rookie Cooper Flagg has missed the last eight games with a left midfoot strain, but the Rookie of the Year candidate recently received a major update surrounding his recovery.
On Tuesday, March 4th, head coach Jason Kidd said, "He's ramping up...everything is going well. Today was kind of to get back in his routine, and hopefully, as we go on this road trip, he can get in and play a game or two."
Flagg is in a tight race for the Rookie of the Year award with former college teammate Kon Knueppel at Duke. Read our article about the odds for the ROTY winner on site.
Flagg isn't in too much trouble to miss out on the awards and All-Rookie team - he has to play in 14 of the Mavericks' remaining 21 games to meet the 65-game threshold needed to qualify for any hardware.
The 19-year-old, former first-round pick had a slow start to the season, but really started to pick it up halfway through the year.
In his last six games before his injury on Feb. 10, Flagg averaged 32.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 52.6% from the floor and 45.5% from three.
Overall on the season, Flagg is averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting 48.2% overall and 30.2% from behind the arc.
As mentioned previously, Kidd said that the Mavs are hoping Flagg can return at some point during their upcoming five-game road trip:
Date | Away Team | Home Team |
Mar. 5 | Dallas Mavericks
Mar. 6 | Dallas Mavericks
Mar. 8 | Dallas Mavericks
Mar. 10 | Dallas Mavericks
Mar. 12 | Dallas Mavericks |
It's unlikely that the Mavericks would have Flagg play a back-to-back fresh off an injury, so there's a possibility he return on the second night of the B2B against the Boston Celtics - his favorite team growing up.
The Mavs could also opt to avoid the back-to-back sequence altogether and have him return for the final three games of the road trip, but only time will tell when the potential Rookie of the Year will return.
