The 2026 World Cup featured a record 48 teams and FIFA might look to expand the tournament even more in future years.
The president of CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation), Alejandro Domínguez, suggested on Monday that the 2030 World Cup could feature 64 teams. The tournament is set to be hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with commemorative opening matches held in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
The Paraguayan official appeared to preempt a new format for the global tournament in a social media post celebrating South American football, titled "The next one is played at home."

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously stated that the governing body is considering expanding the World Cup to encourage the sport's growth in more countries. However, no official changes to the competition's format have been announced to date.
