Ever since he laced up a pair of gloves, Vergil Ortiz Jr. has been tipped for big things.
While some fighters cannot succeed in the amateurs due to their style, Ortiz Jr. won seven national titles as an amateur, and he also won the 2013 Junior Olympics.
He finished his amateur career with a record of 140-20 and he has lived up to the hype after being named 2019 The Ring magazine Prospect of the Year.
The powerful puncher started his professional career in July 2016, beating Julio Rodas in the first round at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.
He beat Ernesto Hernandez and Nestor Garcia before the end of the year before fighting five times in 2017, winning every bout inside three rounds.
Ortiz Jr. first caught the eye of the wider boxing audience in September 2017 when he beat Cesar Valenzuela on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin.
He then fought on the undercard of their rematch in September 2018, taking his record to 11-0 after beating Roberto Ortiz. His first title was won 11 months later when another stoppage victory over Antonio Orozco helped him claim the WBA Gold welterweight crown.
While in recent years he has not been as busy as he would have liked, Ortiz. Jr has still beaten the likes of Brad Solomon, Samuel Vargas, and Maurice Hooker, with his victory over the latter winning him the vacant WBO International welterweight title.
Since 2021, he has beaten Egidijus Kavaliauskas, Michael McKinson and Fredrick Lawson, and a world title shot may now be just a few months away. He has yet to lose as a professional, and he has won all 20 of his bouts by knockout.
Ortiz Jr. will fight Tim Tszyu on August 3, part of the Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov undercard.
Ortiz Jr. scored a first-round knockout victory over Thomas Dulorme on April 27.
