Rolando "Rolly" Romero started his combat career in judo as a youngster, but he soon laced up the gloves at the age of 16, joining Johnny Tocco's Ringside Gym.
Romero took up boxing after watching the 2012 Olympics and his amateur career began back in 2013. He finished his time in the amateur ranks with a record of 25-10, while he earned third place at the Olympic trials in 2015.
His skills, determination and power caught the attention of superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the rest, as they say, is history.
Mayweather's promotional team soon got to work and Romero opened his professional career in December 2016 with a stoppage victory over David Courtney.
His victory inside 61 seconds got him off the mark before he stopped Adrian Leyva, Johnny Estrada, and Alex Silva in his ensuing fights.
Romero won his first 14 fights, only going the distance twice during that time.
In his 12th fight, Romero won the WBA interim world lightweight title after beating Jackson Marinez in Uncasville, Connecticut via unanimous decision, before successfully defending that strap in his 14th professional bout, against Anthony Yigit.
His contest against Yigit was for a shot at WBA world lightweight champion Gervonta Davis in May 2022, and Romero lost the fight against Davis.
Rather than sit on his laurels, Romero responded by taking time away from the ring to ensure he could improve, and it worked perfectly as he stepped up in weight to face Ismael Barroso for the vacant world super lightweight crown.
Barroso failed to hear the final bell, and that allowed Romero to put himself on the map as a world champion before he turned 30.
Romero will face off against Manuel Jaimes on September 14 on the Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga undercard.
Romero suffered his second career professional defeat to Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz via eighth-round knockout on March 30, 2024.
Romero was born on October 14, 1995, making him 28 years old.
Romero is 5' 8" and currently competes in the super lightweight division.
He is known for his knockout power, which is helped by his reach of 68".
Romero is reported to have a net worth of between $4-6million.
