The Minnesota Timberwolves are up 3-1 in their first round matchup against the Denver Nuggets, but that final win needed to clinch the series will be difficult without their star guard - Anthony Edwards.
Edwards had been dealing with runner's knee in his right knee which certainly hampered his explosiveness in the series, but the recent injury involving his right knee is more serious.
The four-time All-Star landed extremely awkwardly on his left knee as it bent invertedly as he tried to contest a layup.
Edwards has been diagnosed with a bone bruise and a hyperextension in his left knee, according to the Timberwolves. He is considered week-to-week.
Edwards scored 22 points in Game 1, 30 in Game 2, 17 in the Wolves' blowout victory in Game 3, and five before leaving Game 4 after playing 18 minutes.
He's obviously a major factor in the Wolves' success, but Minnesota went on to win Game 4 behind an unstoppable Ayo Dosumnu who scored 43 points.
Of course, in that game, Donte DiVincenzo also suffered a major injury - a torn Achilles. The Wolves will have to navigate this series without their two backcourt starters.
Minnesota has been able to win three games this series mostly based on outstanding defense from Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels, along with other big bodies such as Julius Randle and Naz Reid. If they keep that up, the Wolves can definitely beat Denver once in three games even without Edwards and DiVincenzo.
As mentioned above, Edwards is considered week-to-week. Nuggets' star Nikola Jokic suffered a very similar injury in December, and he was out for almost exactly a month long. With it being the playoffs now, the Wolves will want Edwards back sooner than that.
He suffered the injury on Apr. 25, and Game 7 of the first round, if necessary, will happen on Mar. 2. With only a week left in the series, it's hard to imagine that he'll return, even if it does go to seven games.
The best case for the Wolves is to make it out of the first round, and manage to win a couple games against the San Antonio Spurs in the second round, before inserting Edwards back in the lineup towards the back-half of that series.
Game 5 of Wolves vs. Nuggets tips off at 10:30 PM ET tonight, Monday, Apr. 27 from Ball Arena in Denver, CO.
