Three-time world champion Peter Wright is looking to avenge last year’s bet365 US Darts Masters defeat to Michael Smith.
The 53-year-old Scot reached the semi-finals in 2022 by overcoming American duo Danny Baggish and Leonard Gates.
However, he came unstuck in the semi-finals as he was beaten 8-6 by Michael Smith, who would go on to lift the trophy by beating Michael van Gerwen 8-4 in the final.
Wright is excited to be returning to Madison Square Garden for the bet365 US Darts Masters, and he’s keen to face the current world champion in the United States again.
“I’m really looking forward to it, I enjoyed it last year,” said Wright.
“Just to play at Madison Square Garden was brilliant; the crowds were absolutely amazing for the first turnout of a US tournament there.
“I'm really looking forward to going back and getting my revenge on Michael Smith, who obviously picked up the trophy.
“It’s a bit nerve-wracking, you get little butterflies knowing the amount of sports stars and the events that have taken place there in the past. I’m proud to be going back.
“I just want revenge on him (Smith) for last year! I’m looking forward to hopefully playing him again, hopefully in the final.”
The World Series of Darts events allow players such as Wright to visit some less familiar venues, whilst also looking to attract a new audience.
The experience of playing in the United States has been a positive one for ‘Snakebite’ and he was particularly impressed with the fans.
“It’s totally different, you’re playing at an iconic venue, I must admit the darts players in the US are a lot stronger compared to other countries we go to, so its more difficult.
“The audience last year was brilliant, they all enjoyed themselves and they supported every single darts player. There was no horrible booing and whistling, they took it as one of the great darts shows.”
