Yang Hyun-jun Injury Timeline: Martin O'Neill provides update on Celtic winger

Martin O'Neill was asked about Yang Hyun-jun's fitness ahead of Celtic's clash with Motherwell on Sunday.

A trip to Fir Park this weekend will offer Celtic the chance to get back to winning ways following a series of disappointing results prior to the international break.

Despite suffering consecutive defeats in three separate competitions, the Bhoys remain top of the Scottish Premiership - two points clear of their nearest challengers Rangers.

While the break has allowed some of Celtic's injured players to recuperate ahead of their return to club football, the club have been dealt a fresh injury setback in the form of Yang.

The 24-year-old missed four games prior to the interval after being called up to represent South Korea at the 2026 Asian Games in South Korea.

While he would make just a single appearance in the competition - notching an assist in a 4-1 win over Qatar in their group stage opener - Yang would be hailed for his impact as the defending champions reclaimed their title in Japan.

In addition to a gold medal, he also appears to have picked up an injury during his time on international duty.

When is Yang Hyun-jun expected to return from injury?

Reports suggest that Yang suffered a hamstring injury while representing his country as one of the three overage players at the Asian Games.

Initial reports suggested that the former Gangwon FC star could spend multiple weeks on the sidelines, but it is now believed that the setback is not as bad as first feared.

Yang will however be absent from the matchday squad for the clash with Motherwell.

Speaking ahead of the game O'Neill revealed that Yang had not featured in training and would play no part this weekend.

"Yang's been out, but I'll see about Cameron Carter," O'Neill said. "He's got a bit of a strain at this minute, but we'll see how he is."

While it is not clear at this stage it appears unlikely based on the information that Yang will return in time for the club's trip to Portugal to take on Benfica in midweek.

As such, Yang will likely hope to make his return to first-team action when Celtic play host to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on 18 October.
