When did Lincoln City last play in the second tier?

After six seasons in League One, Lincoln City find themselves on the cusp of promotion with just seven games remaining.

Lincoln City v AFC Wimbledon

A remarkable 22-game unbeaten run in the league has seen the Imps leapfrog Cardiff City into top spot, and they currently sit 18 points clear of third place Bolton.

Lincoln's last defeat in the league came all the way back all the way back in November, when a late goal from Wycombe captain Jack Grimmer secured a 3-2 for the fellow promotion hopefuls.

Should Michael Skubala's side claim all three points against Wimbledon on Friday they could become the first club in the EFL to secure promotion this season, with the league title increasingly within their grasp.

When did Lincoln last play in the second tier?

Lincoln's last spell in the second tier came all the way back in 1961 when their nine-season stint in the old Second Division came to an end as they finished bottom of the table.

Their final game of that campaign would see them secure one of just eight wins all season, as goals from Fred Middleton and Joe Buick secured a 2-0 win for the already-relegated side against Leyton Orient.

Their first season back in the Third Division would bring yet more misery for supporters as they suffered a second successive relegation, dropping into the fourth tier where they would remain for more than a decade.

Since then the Imps have dropped outside the Football League on two separate occasions, most recently between 2011 and 2016.

During that time the club embarked on one of the most memorable periods of their history as Danny Cowley led them to the quarter finals of the FA Cup, becoming the first non-league side in over a century to reach the last eight.

That season also saw Lincoln crowned National League champions, beginning the ascent up the football pyramid that has put them on the cusp of a place in the Championship.
