When did Leicester City last play in League One?

From Premier League champions to League One in the space of a decade, Leicester City's decline has been startling.

The Foxes' relegation to the third tier was confirmed when being held to a 2-2 draw by Hull City on Tuesday night, despite taking the lead through Luke Thomas in the 54th minute.

A six-point deduction for breaching the Football League's profit and sustainability rules has certainly not helped matters this campaign, but Leicester's squad have grossly underperformed.

Since Marti Cifeuntes' sacking at the end of January, the Foxes have won just one of 15 matches, accruing 10 points from a possible 45 to plummet down the Championship standings.

The appointment of Gary Rowett in mid-February has failed to galvanise the 2015/16 Premier League champions and after losing to Hull, the ignominy of relegation has been confirmed.

When did Leicester City last play in the third tier?

It's remarkable to think that five years go, Leicester were crowned FA Cup champions following a 1-0 triumph over Chelsea.

The triumph at Wembley soothed the heartache of missing out on UEFA Champions League as defeats to their FA Cup victims Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur saw them slip to fifth having occupied a top four position for 36 of the 38 gameweeks in the season.

The season after they reached the UEFA Conference League semi-finals and finished eighth in the Premier League. It was a campaign that was greeted with disappointment; how Foxes supporters would yearn for a season like that now.

After being relegated in the 2025/26 Championship campaign, they will return to League One for the first time since 2008/09. That season was Leicester's first campaign outside the top two tiers of English football.

Finishing 22nd in the 2007/08 Championship, Nigel Pearson orchestrated an immediate return to the second tier as Leicester were crowned League One champions in 2008/09.

The Foxes won four of their last five matches to finish seven points clear of Peterborough United at the summit of a division which consisted of clubs that are now non-league: Yeovil Town, Hartlepool United, Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United and Hereford Town.
