With the 2026/27 Football League season underway and the return of the Premier League upon us we've taken a look at every club's nickname.
Nicknames for football clubs are often nearly as old as the clubs themselves and derive from a multitude of different sources.
Some teams were christened with their moniker by supporters while others adopted an antonym - or self-designated nickname.
Of the 92 teams playing in the top four divisions of English football every club has a recognised nickname, many of which have become synonymous with the team and their fanbase.
Some nicknames are shared between multiple clubs. For example both Wigan and Oldham took on the nickname 'Latics' in reference to the word 'Athletic' in each club's name.
Another Athletic in Charlton are referred to as the 'Addicks' with the sobriquet said to have been born out of early players being fed haddock by a local fishmonger.
Meanwhile League Two side Bristol Rovers are sometimes referred to as 'The Gas' because the club's original Eastville Stadium home was located next to a gasworks.
