What are the nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments?

The ATP Masters 1000 series consists of nine tournaments across three continents with significant ranking points and lucrative prize money on offer.

Below only the Grand Slam tournaments and the year-end ATP Finals in prestige, Masters 1000 tournaments make up the most coveted trophies on the annual ATP Tour calendar.

First introduced in 1990 alongside the inception of the ATP Tour, Novak Djokovic is the most decorated players in Masters 1000 history, achieving 40 singles titles in the series. The Serbian is the only player to achieve the career Golden Masters, which involves winning all nine of the 1000 series tournaments - such is Djokovic's extraordinary talent, he's accomplished the feat twice!

In October 2025, the ATP revealed a 10th Masters 1000 tournament will be added to the calendar in Saudi Arabia from 2028.

Of the current nine, five are outdoor hard-court events, three are clay-court tournaments and one is hard-court indoor - there are no grass tournaments with Masters status.

ATP Masters 1000 tournaments

Indian Wells Open

The Indian Wells Open in California is the first tournament on the Masters 1000 calendar and is sometimes referenced as the 'fifth Grand Slam' due to its prestige and popularity.

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer share the record for the most titles at the hard-court event with five apiece.

Miami Open

The second part of the 'Sunshine Double' - the accomplishment of winning the hard-court duo of Indian Wells and the Miami Open - the tournament is staged at the Hard Rock Stadium and like Indian Wells, features as part of the WTA 1000 events on the WTA Tour.

The Miami Open was the last Masters title of Roger Federer's illustrious career when he defeated John Isner in the final in 2019.

Monte-Carlo Masters

The first of three clay-court Masters events, the Monte-Carlo Masters marks the unofficial start to tennis' European clay-court swing.

Held at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, it's a tournament that belongs to Rafael Nadal, with the Spaniard winning a record 11 titles - eight more than anyone else.

Madrid Open

Played on clay courts at the Caja Mágica in Manzanares Park, the Madrid Open plays a key role in the build-up to the French Open.

The tournament made the headlines in 2012 when it became the first competition to incorporate a blue clay surface, but the idea was short-lived when Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic threatened to boycott the event and the tournament returned to a traditional red clay for the 2013 season.

Italian Open

The final clay-court event on the Masters schedule and held in the second week of May, the Italian Open is held at the Foro Italico in Rome.

Rafael Nadal's clay supremacy stretched into Italy with the Spaniard winning this event 10 times, four more than Novak Djokovic's second-best tally.

Italian Tennis Federation president Angelo Binaghi has the grandiose aim to make the Italian Open a fifth Grand Slam alongside the original four major tournaments.

Canadian Open

Following the conclusion of the Italian Open, the world's best players compete at the French Open and Wimbledon before returning to the Masters scene with the Canadian Open.

The second-oldest active tennis tournament in the world after Wimbledon, the Canadian Open is a hard-court event which alternates each year between the cities of Montreal and Toronto.

Cincinnati Open

Considered the final significant warm-up act before the US Open at Flushing Meadows, the Cincinnati Open played on outdoor hard courts at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio - 22 miles outside Cincinnati.

Roger Federer is the most decorated player in the competition's history, winning seven titles between 2005 and 2015.

Shanghai Masters

The Shanghai Masters is the penultimate Masters 1000 event on the calendar and takes place on the outdoor hard courts at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.

The only tournament to feature outside of Europe and North America, the Shanghai Masters was inducted to the Masters series in 2009 and has been won on multiple occasions by Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Paris Masters

Last and by no means least, the Paris Masters is the only indoor tournament to feature in the series.

The hard-court event moved from the Accor Arena after 38 years to the La Défense Arena in the French capital in 2025.

Interestingly, Novak Djokovic is the only player in the tournament's history to successfully defend the men's singles title, with the Serbian going on to achieve seven successes in the competition.
