UEFA Stadium Categories: What makes a venue fit for European football?

Every club dreams of competing on the European stage, but not every stadium is equipped to host international matches.

UEFA enforces strict regulations for its club competitions, setting a high bar for venues hoping to welcome Europe's elite.

This article breaks down the requirements stadiums must meet to be approved for UEFA tournaments.

UEFA Competitions

How Does the Classification System Work?

The UEFA stadium classification system evaluates venues based on a comprehensive set of criteria, including safety, comfort, infrastructure, and technological capabilities.

This rating determines which stadiums are suitable for hosting matches in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League and at what stage of the competition.

It's a clear message from the governing body: top-tier football requires top-tier facilities.

Before 2006, stadiums were rated on a one-to-five-star scale, but this has since been replaced by a four-category system.

The Four Categories Explained

Category 1

This is the most basic classification, primarily intended for domestic and youth competitions like the UEFA Youth League.

Stadiums in this category meet fundamental requirements, with assessments focusing on pitch quality and sanitary facilities.

They are not eligible to host senior international club matches.

Category 2

Venues in this category are a step up but are still not approved for the main stages of European competitions.

However, they can be used for the first and second qualifying rounds of the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

Category 3

Stadiums with a Category 3 rating can host matches up to and including the third qualifying round of European club competitions.

The requirements here are significantly stricter than for the lower categories, demanding a larger minimum seating capacity, improved infrastructure and better facilities for media, referees and official delegations.

Category 4

This is the highest and most prestigious classification.

Category 4 stadiums meet UEFA's most stringent standards and are the only ones permitted to host matches from the group stage onwards in all three major European competitions, including the finals.

What Are the Key Requirements for Category 4?

To host group stage matches in the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League, a stadium must achieve a Category 4 rating. The primary criteria include:

Capacity:

  • A minimum capacity of 8000 seats is required.

Safety:

  • Advanced safety systems.
  • Good crowd management.
  • Sufficient security and escape routes.

Facilities:

  • Modern and spacious changing rooms.
  • Medical rooms and warm-up facilities for players.
  • Professional press room and broadcast facilities.
  • Mixed zone for interviews.
  • Additional workspaces for the media.
  • Sufficient skyboxes, lounges and other reception areas.

Field:

  • A perfectly maintained, top-quality field with the official dimensions: 105 meters long and 68 meters wide.

Lighting:

  • Powerful field lighting with a minimum of 1200 lux, often higher required for TV broadcasts.

Technology:

  • Large, clear video screens.
  • A good sound system.

Comfort:

  • Modern and comfortable seating for all spectators.

Which category is required for each competition?

UEFA applies the following guidelines for the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League:

  • First and second preliminary round: category 2
  • Third preliminary round: category 3
  • Playoff round and beyond: category 4
