Everton's striker search takes latest hit as target nears move to La Liga

Former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is reportedly closing in on a move to join Malaga.

Martial is currently a free agent, having departed Liga MX side Monterrey in June.

The Frenchman is said to be intent on a return to European football, with reports circulating that he had been offered to numerous clubs following last week's transfer deadline.

One of those teams was said to be Everton, with the Toffees in dire need of attacking reinforcements.

Last season's top scorer Beto departed the club on deadline day, joining Fiorentina to bring the curtain down on a three-year spell on Merseyside.

A deal had been agreed for Everton to sign USA international Folarin Balogun, however the move collapsed at the eleventh hour when the striker had a change of heart after completing his medical.

They then attempted to sign Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee on loan but that ultimately proved unsuccessful, leaving Thierno Barry as the club's only senior out-and-out forward.

Reports claim that Everton have not ruled out pursuing Martial, though it is said that his wage demands may be in excess of what they would be willing to pay a backup.

In the meantime newly-promoted La Liga side Malaga have emerged as a potential destination for the 30-year-old.

According to a report from Matteo Moretto, the club are weighing up a move for Martial, whose only previous experience in Spanish football came during a brief loan spell at Sevilla in 2022.

Martial spent nine seasons at Manchester United between 2015 and 2024, netting 90 goals in 317 appearances in all competitions.
