UEFA Champions League Records: Most manager finals

While 20 managers have reached more than one European Cup or UEFA Champions League final, only five can say they've appeared in four or more

Below, we look at the managers to have appeared in the most European Cup and UEFA Champions League finals.

UEFA Champions League

Jurgen Klopp (2013, 2018, 2019, 2022)

First achieving major success with Borussia Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp took the German club to Wembley where they were downed by Bayern Munich.

Klopp would move onto bigger things, however, tasked with returning Liverpool to the top of English and European football, a job he carried out superbly.

First reaching the final with Liverpool in 2018, Klopp's side fell agonisingly short in part due to goalkeeping error and in part due to perhaps the best volley scored in a UEFA Champions League final by a Real Madrid player.

Returning fresh the following year, the Reds beat Tottenham 2-0 as Klopp finally got his hands on the trophy.

But Real Madrid would be his undoing again in 2022, losing 1-0 to the Spanish giants.

Miguel Munoz - 4 (1960, 1962, 1964, 1966)

While Real Madrid's first four European Cups were won by three managers who enjoyed short stints in the Spanish capital, the fifth and sixth were won by Miguel Munoz.

Munoz won the European Cup in his first season, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in one of the competition's most famous fixtures.

It would take six years to get his hands on the famous trophy again, and with two finals in between, Munoz

Sir Alex Ferguson - 4 (1999, 2008, 2009, 2013)

It could be argued that Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United under-achieved in Europe, particularly considering their domestic success.

Ferguson's United would snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in 1999, but it took another nine years to reach another final. By this point, the Red Devils had fallen at the semi-final stage three times, but they got over the line against Barcelona, beating Chelsea on penalties.

Barca got their revenge the year after, with United no match for the Catalan giants in Rome, with the same opponents beating Ferguson's men at Wembley in 2013.

Marcello Lippi - 4 (1996, 1997, 1998, 2003)

Undoubtedly one of the best managers of his generation, Marcello Lippi took over an incredibly talented Juventus team that looked well set to conquer Europe.

They'd win the UEFA Champions League in 1996, reaching finals in 1997 and 1998 but falling short to Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, but taking on rivals Milan at Old Trafford in 2003.

The Old Lady would be without suspended talisman and that year's Ballon d'Or winner Pavel Nedved as the game petered out into a dull 0-0 draw, with Milan triumphing on penalties.

Carlo Ancelotti - 6 (2003, 2005, 2007, 2014, 2022, 2024)

It's a testament to Carlo Ancelotti's management that he's actually won more finals than any other manager has appeared in.

The first was in 2003 as his Milan side beat Juventus on penalties. The second came two years later when the Rossoneri somehow conspired to throw away a three-goal lead to Liverpool. Ancelotti and Milan did get their revenge two years later though, beating Liverpool 2-0.

Seven years later, Ancelotti would reach the UEFA Champions League final with Real Madrid in his first campaign, sealing 'La Decima' for the Spanish giants.

Despite his dismissal a year later, Ancelotti returned, winning two more finals in 2022 and 2024.
