UEFA Champions League Records: Most hat-tricks

102 players have scored a hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League and we've delved into the record books to pick out the individuals who have recorded the most trebles in the competition.

Football

Neymar (3)

Clubs: Barcelona (1), PSG (2)

Neymar chalked up his first hat-trick on the UEFA Champions League stage in Barcelona's 6-1 rout of Celtic in December 2013.

It wasn't for another five years when Neymar, now with Paris Saint-Germain, recorded his second UEFA Champions League hat-trick against Red Star Belgrade and the Brazilian joined an exclusive list of players with three hat-tricks when he netted three times against Istanbul Basaksehir in December 2020.

Luiz Adriano (3)

Club: Shakhtar Donetsk

Mention the name of Luiz Adriano before someone of a BATE Borisov allegiance and they cower in fear.

The forward mercilessly ripped through the Belarusian outfit in the autumn of 2014 to become only the second player after Lionel Messi to score five goals in a UEFA Champions League match (they have since been joined by Erling Haaland).

15 days later in the reverse fixture, Luiz Adriano recorded another hat-trick against BATE as he inspired Shakhtar to a 5-0 win. It took his tally of goals in that year's group stage to nine, which is the most of any individual in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The Brazilian had registered his first UEFA Champions League hat-trick two years prior when he netted three times in Shakhtar's 5-2 win over Danish side Nordsjælland in November 2012.

Mario Gomez (3)

Club: Bayern Munich

Romanian side CFR Cluj were the first side Mario Gomez registered a UEFA Champions League hat-trick against in November 2010.

Almost a year to the day later, the German forward scored a match-winning hat-trick against Napoli to seal a 3-2 win and Gomez became the second player after Messi to score more than one hat-trick in the same season, netting four against Basel in March 2012.

Filippo Inzaghi (3)

Clubs: Juventus (2), Milan (1)

Filippo Inzaghi became the first Juventus player to score a UEFA Champions League hat-trick when he found the back of the net on three occasions against Dynamo Kiev in March 1998.

His second hat-trick came in a 4-4 draw against Hamburger SV in September 2000, which is one of only three occasions where a player has scored a hat-trick and his team have drawn the match.

Inzaghi was donning Milan's iconic red and black strip when he fired in his third UEFA Champions League hat-trick against Deportivo La Coruna in September 2002.

Karim Benzema (4)

Club: Real Madrid

Karim Benzema followed in the footsteps of Raul and Ronaldo when he netted his first UEFA Champions League hat-trick for Real Madrid against Auxerre in December 2010.

The Frenchman would wait five years for his second as he scored three times in an 8-0 win over Malmo, a fixture that also saw Cristiano Ronaldo score a hat-trick, and Benzema would wait another seven years before two came along at once.

Scoring three against PSG in March 2022, Benzema recorded his fourth UEFA Champions League hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Chelsea in April that year, which made him the oldest player to score a treble in the competition at 34 years and 108 days.

Robert Lewandowski (6)

Clubs: Borussia Dortmund (1), Bayern Munich (4), Barcelona (1)

The only player in UEFA Champions League history to score a hat-trick for three different clubs.

Robert Lewandowski truly announced himself on the world stage with a four-goal haul for Borussia Dortmund against Real Madrid in April 2013, a season that saw Die Borussen defeated by Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich in the final.

The Polish forward had already agreed terms with Bayern at that point and Lewandowski recorded four hat-tricks for the Bavarian giants when opposing Dinamo Zagreb, Red Star Belgrade, Benfica and lastly Red Bull Salzburg, where it took him just nine minutes to score three.

Lewandowski also set a record in the win over Red Star Belgrade by scoring four goals in 16 minutes.

A move to Barcelona in 2022 brought Lewandowski his sixth UEFA Champions League hat-trick against Viktoria Plzen.

Cristiano Ronaldo (8)

Clubs: Real Madrid (7), Juventus (1)

It's of little surprise to see that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the top two players on this list.

Interestingly, Ronaldo never bagged a UEFA Champions League hat-trick for Manchester United and it wasn't until three years into his stint at Real Madrid that the Portuguese ace netted his first hat-trick in the competition against Ajax in 2012.

The floodgates soon opened and by the time Ronaldo departed the Santiago Bernabeu in 2018, he had seven UEFA Champions League hat-tricks to his name, including three in the 2015/16 campaign - the most of any player in an individual season.

His treble against Atletico Madrid in 2017 is one of only five hat-tricks in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, and Ronaldo put Diego Simeone's men to the sword again two years later on behalf of Juventus to equal Messi's record of eight UCL hat-tricks.

Lionel Messi (8)

Club: Barcelona

Lionel Messi scored a UEFA Champions League hat-trick in five consecutive calendar years from 2010, which is testament to the Argentine's frightening consistency.

Opening his hat-trick account against Arsenal in 2010, Messi became the first player in the competition's history to score five goals in a single UEFA Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen in 2012.

Hat-tricks against Ajax, APOEL Nicosia, Celtic, Manchester City and PSV Eindhoven saw his tally rise to eight, a record equalled by Cristiano Ronaldo just six months later.
