"Special" Tyler Fletcher could replace Billy Gilmour in Scotland World Cup squad

Tyler Fletcher - son of former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher - is one of a few names in line to replace the injured Billy Gilmour in Scotland's World Cup squad.

Napoli playmaker Gilmour suffered a cruel blow when he picked up a knee injury during Scotland's 4-1 friendly win over Curucao, thus ruling him out of this summer's tournament in North America.

The Scottish FA confirmed the news that Gilmour would miss out, saying: "We're all with you, Billy."

Scott McTominay, a teammate of Gilmour's for both club and country added: "Absolutely devasted for you brother, football is a cruel game and you don't deserve this, keep your head up. The players, staff and country love you."

Scotland boss Steve Clarke will now be tasked with choosing a replacement for the 24-year-old and Fletcher is one of a number of players in the running.

World Cup

Although not included in Clarke's 26-strong list, Fletcher, alongside Rangers' Connor Barron, Sparta Prague's Andy Irving and Udinese's Lennon Miller form a group of youngsters that have trained with the World Cup squad this week.

The 19-year-old made his Scotland debut during Saturday's friendly win, coming on as a half-time substitute for Ben Gannon-Doak and Clarke was taken by his performance.

"Everybody was impressed - the players were impressed, the coaching staff were impressed, I had no doubts.

"I actually thought about putting him on as Billy came off but I just thought I'd have a little look, see how the game panned out before introducing him at half-time."

Speaking to the media post-game, Scotland midfielder Kenny McClean added to Clarke's comments, drawing comparisons with his father.

"I said to the lads after his first session, I could see something special in him, so I was glad that he'd got on today. He deserved it after the week he's had," said McClean.

"In my first session with Scotland, Darren stood out a mile. Fortunately for us, his son is pretty similar. There's a lot of potential, it's about using him the right way."

The Scotland squad are set to fly to the United States on Sunday where they will have one further friendly against Bolivia before their opening group stage match against Haiti.
