Sheffield Wednesday owner David Storch has revealed the club are doing everything in their power to try and sign Jamie Vardy.
Vardy's next career step has been of great intrigue following his exit from Italian side Cremonese earlier this summer, and the 39-year-old has been content at weighing up his options for the 2026/27 season.
The Leicester City legend and 2019/20 Premier League Golden Boot winner is a boyhood Sheffield Wednesday fan and was on the books at Hillsborough as a youngster.
However, it's going to require more than sentiment for the Owls to lure Vardy back to S6 for a League One promotion charge, and the veteran striker has interest from the Championship, including West Ham United.
Wednesday have been limited to free agent captures and loan signings as they work under financial restrictions after exiting administration, and while Storch admits the limitations have made the transfer market difficult, he is optimistic that the club can conjure an offer that will entice Vardy to return.
Storch told talkSPORT: “At some point, I'll be able to tell a story. This might not be the right time, but Jamie (Vardy) is somebody that we would like to have in our club.
“Let's just say he'd be somebody that we would be thrilled to have on the club. Unfortunately, we do have these restrictions. We're trying to figure out how to get around the restrictions to put something in front of Jamie that would make sense for him.
“The club is handicapped. We came out of administration with certain restrictions on what we could and couldn't do, and I was less informed in terms of how it actually would play out.
"And unfortunately, it's played out a little harder than we expected. At the same token, I think we have one of the greatest sporting directors in the game, and Simon (Wilson) is figuring it out, and I have a lot of confidence that by the time this campaign is over, we will have given a very good account of ourselves.”
Wednesday commence their 2026/27 League One campaign in the capital as they take on Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.
