Shortest managerial reigns in Rangers history

Russell Martin's dismal tenure at Rangers came to an end after his side were held to a 1-1 draw away at Falkirk, and we take a look at the shortest managerial reigns in the club's history.

Scottish Premiership

1) Russell Martin

122 days (June 2025 - October 2025)

It took 122 days for Russell Martin to be dismissed at Ibrox, but the truth is that Rangers fans' patience was wearing thin weeks prior to his sacking.

Winning just one of the Gers' opening seven Scottish Premiership contests and possessing an insufficient 29.41% win record in all competitions, it surprised many that it took as long for the higher-ups to cut ties with the manager.

2) Pedro Caixinha

227 days (March 2017 - October 2017)

Winning 14 of 26 games in charge at Rangers, Pedro Caixinha's 53.85% was drastically better than Martin's, but not enough to salvage his job.

The Portuguese manager joined the club in March 2017 to see off the back end of the 2016/17 Scottish Premiership term, in which Rangers finished in third behind Aberdeen a league winners Celtic.

Despite losing just two of 10 league outings to open the 2017/18 campaign, a 1-1 draw at home to Kilmarnock was enough to see Caixinha dismissed.

3) Paul Le Guen

240 days (May 2006 - January 2007)

Paul Le Guen's start to life at Ibrox didn't exactly hold him in good stead, boasting the then worst start to a season by an Old Firm debutant after 10 games since John Greig's Rangers side in 1978/79.

When departing via mutual consent on 4th January, 2007, Le Guen became the only manager to leave the club without completing a full season in charge, concluding a bitterly disappointing spell domestically, despite guiding his side to a first placed finish in the UEFA Cup group stage standings.

4) Michael Beale

307 days (November 2022 - October 2023)

Having worked previously as the first team coach under Steven Gerrard, it was no surprise to see Michael Beale trade QPR for Rangers when approached in November 2022.

92 points wasn't enough to clinch the title over Glasgow rivals Celtic and Rangers went trophyless in the 2022/23 season, subsequently sacked after losing three of their opening seven to start the following league term.

5) Giovanni van Bronckhorst

368 days (November 2021 - November 2022)

Now amongst Arne Slot's backroom staff at Liverpool, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was employed as Gerrard's successor at Ibrox in 2021, 20 years after leaving the club as a player.

He won the Scottish Premiership (twice), Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup at his time there as a player, and he was able to guide the club to a Europa League final in his stint as manager, falling short to Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt via penalties.

The start to the 2022/23 season wasn't quite as convincing, however, and the Dutchman was sacked during the World Cup break after the Gers fell nine points short of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership standings.
