Preston North End are eyeing up a move for Southampton forward Cameron Archer ahead of the transfer deadline.
Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that the Lilywhites are attempting to secure a loan deal for the striker.
It is believed that Preston were interested in Sheffield United striker Tom Cannon but they have been priced out of a potential deal.
Archer is on the radar of a number of Championship clubs, with Derby County also reportedly keen on signing the player.
Archer spent time on loan at Deepdale during the 2021/22 season and he scored seven goals in 20 appearances.
Another successful loan spell at Middlesbrough the following season saw him become one of the most in-demand strikers in English football.
However, his career has stalled over in recent times and a return of 11 goals in 77 matches at Southampton has not pulled up any trees.
The Saints are open to letting the player leave over the next few days and Preston will be hoping that they are at the front of the queue to complete a deal.
